We are excited to advertise this dynamic post to support the Clinical Service Unit structure. Working closely with the Clinical Director, General Manager and Deputy Director of Nursing for the CSU the successful candidate will be responsible for providing strong, visible leadership and support to MSK and therapies services., enabling staff to ensure that the fundamentals of care are correctly and actively in place, and that high standards of holistic care are achieved. You will be responsible for the management of risk, patient safety, patient experience and maintaining high levels of quality. You must be able to demonstrate excellent organizational skills, an understanding of change management processes and the ability to inspire, lead and develop a team.

We are looking for a dynamic and proactive person that can support the CSU to take its services to outstanding.

You will be able to evidence how you have positively influenced nursing and patient care and have experience of change management. The ideal candidate must have a proven track record of progressive leadership and development, be an effective role model, self-motivated with the passion, drive and adaptability to cope with continuously changing services.

Main duties of the job

You will provide professional leadership and ensure that at all times the needs of the patients are placed at the Centre of care delivery. In conjunction with the senior nursing team ensure that staff will feel supported and thrive within the clinical areas, providing evidenced based quality care to every patient.

With the support of the Deputy Director of Nursing , the Matron will take responsibility for action planning and implementing change within the clinical area, working with Ward and Service Managers to ensure that the CSU and Trust objectives and targets are met.

Job responsibilities

You will need to be flexible and resilient to cope with the demands of the role. In addition you must be able to influence and negotiate in order to improve the service your teams provide for their patients. Evidence of continuing professional development is essential.

This role is supported by Deputy Matrons and the post holder will be responsible for managing the workload of this senior team to ensure safe and effective delivery of services across the CSU and to work collaboratively with aligning CSU's.

Person Specification



  • Registrant (NMC or HCPC registered)



  • First level Registered Nurse
  • First Degree or equivalent level of knowledge and experience gained in a relevant environment
  • Post Registration qualification / or robust CPD in relevant speciality
  • Recognised Leadership Qualification or equivalent experience
  • Evidence of commitment to continuous learning and application in practice


  • A Masters level qualification in relevant subject or evidence of equivalent knowledge and experience



  • Substantial management/leadership experience at senior nurse level in relevant clinical speciality
  • Experience of working within Acute Hospital setting
  • Able to demonstrate an understanding of Health Policy and its impact on the Professional Nursing Agenda and BTHFT
  • Experience of delivering service improvements with demonstrable positive impact on patient safety, patient experience and quality of care
  • Evidence of a track record of developing nursing practice, or Research Experience and audit application
  • Leading and developing a team
  • Experience of: - budget management including human resource management - quality assurance - change management - complaints handling - policy implementation - participation in Trust-wide initiatives/ committee membership
