An exciting opportunity has arisen for a compassionate, highly motivated, ambitious, and inspirational professional clinical leader to lead the quality, patient safety, clinical effectiveness, patient experience and wider clinical governance agenda across the Division of Urgent and Emergency Care at Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals.

The post holder will work with the Matrons to create an environment where the patient is central to all decision making and the delivery of high quality compassionate care is everybody's prime objective. The post holder will be responsible for ensuring that the Acute Medical wards, Minor Injury Unit, Emergency Departments and the ACU/SDEC departments across the DBTH footprint are delivered to the highest standard, with evidenced based practice, ensuring we create an environment where patients feel safe, cared for and confident in treatment they receive and strive to be the best provider in our class.

Main duties of the job

Working alongside the Divisional Nurse, Matrons and wider leadership team, we are looking for a person who inspires, motivates and empowers the nursing workforce and provides professional leadership within the Division of Urgent and Emergency Care.

The role will be responsible for all of the Urgent and Emergency Care services covering Doncaster Royal Infirmary, Bassetlaw hospital and Mexborough hospital.

Person Specification

Knowledge and Experience


  • Proven track record of successful and sustained nursing management and leadership within secondary care or similar organisation at 8a or above.
  • Proven experience of managing a significant service budget at speciality level.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of NHS system reform policy and other key policy drivers
  • Experience of workforce planning including recruitment & retention strategies, career pathway development, learning needs analysis.
  • Evidence of successful delivery of significant practice change
  • Experience of managing, developing and supporting people and teams and managing complex staffing issues
  • Able to demonstrate significant knowledge and understanding of clinical governance and its application to improve care.
  • Proven experience of leading a service / clinical governance delivery group including chairing meetings
  • Ability to write business cases/reports/SI/complaints to a consistently high level.
  • Proven ability to influence local policy / service delivery utilising effective leadership skills.


  • Experience of policy development and implementation within service / Trust wide.
  • Involvement in complex and sophisticated service development and reconfiguration.
  • Participated in or facilitated nursing related research activities.
  • Recognised training/qualification in clinical governance

Qualifications / Training


  • Registered with the Nursing & Midwifery Council on sub part 1 or sub part 2 of the register
  • Education to first level degree in a relevant field
  • Recognised, leadership qualification and / or equivalent level of experience
  • Evidence of continuous professional/personal development post qualification including clinical, leadership, Quality Improvement
  • Proven ability to utilise IT effectively and efficientlY


  • Master Degree or evidence of study at Masters level
  • Qii coaching qualification
  • Postgraduate qualification or equivalent experience in a related clinical subject

  • Evidence of effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrates and role models an inclusive approach to staff and patients
  • Understands the need to work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to achieve positive outcomes for patients.
  • Demonstrates openness to learning from others and improving services for the greater good
  • Able to influence senior clinicians and teams in service delivery and change management.


  • Evidence of working with external partners including CCG, National teams and other secondary care Trusts.
