An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Conquest Estates department at East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust as an Mechanical Maintenance Craftsperson working alongside the Estates Operational Team to support the day to day operational maintenance of the ESHT estate. Main duties of the job

We are looking to recruit someone who can excel in providing an organised and highly efficient service, a person who can be innovative in their thinking and have the ability to make decisions for themselves and someone who can develop and support the service improvements of the department ensuring that we are fit for the future.

You will have relevant knowledge and experience in an mechanical engineering role and will have successfully completed a recognised mechanical Craft apprenticeship (NVQ3) or equivalent.

The main duties of this role include:
  • Undertake routine planned maintenance on mechanical equipment within healthcare premises.
  • Carry out reactive repairs to mechanical equipment as they arise.
  • Carry out repairs and servicing to a range of building services including:
  • MPHW boiler systems.
  • Building management systems
  • Waste water systems.
  • Low pressure heating systems.
  • Hot and cold water systems.
  • Pneumatic tube systems.
  • Undertake the role of Competent Person as defined by HTM 02-01 Medical Gas Pipeline Systems.
  • Undertake the role of Competent Person as defined by HTM 03-01 Ventilation for Healthcare Buildings.
  • Undertake the role of Competent Person as defined by HTM 04-01 Safe water in Healthcare Premises.
  • Participate in the On-Call rota.

This position involves working a five day week (Mon-Fri) covering the core hours of 07.00 to 15.30 on week one and 08.30 to 17.00 on week two. You will then alternate between these two shifts each week.

Person Specification



  • Completion of recognised Trade / CITB / EITB or EnTra apprenticeship plus Relevant City and Guilds / BTEC ONC
  • At least 3 years other approved qualification and training to at least NVQ level 3 in an engineering or plumbing discipline
  • Within 1 year of recruitment to attain via relevant training and appointment Competent Person status, as required and relevant to the post for: HTM 01 Decontamination, HTM 02 Medical Gases, HTM 03 Heating and Ventilation, HTM 04 Water Systems, HTM 05 Fire, HTM 06 Electrical Systems, HTM 07 environment and Sustainability, HTM 08 Specialist Services, Pressure Systems
  • Confined Space training
  • Pool Plant Operators training


  • Current Edition of IEE Regulations (BS 7671)
  • C& G 2391 Inspection and testing certificate
  • Manual Handling
  • European Computer Driving License (ECDL) level Module 7
  • Gas Safe Qualifications / Registration
  • Approved welder
  • IPAF



  • Operation, maintenance and repair of complex NHS or equivalent building stock, its fabric, services, plant and equipment


  • Experience of working in an Acute Hospital environment



  • Sound diagnostic and analytical skills with good problem solving abilities
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989
  • Ability to work under pressure and to deadlines with minimum supervision in a demand driven service
  • Self motivated and adaptable to change
  • Ability to work at height from appropriate equipment
  • Computer literate
  • Able to give and receive training appropriate to responsibilities and service needs
  • Ability to understand and apply Operation and Maintenance (O & M) documents and techniques in the process of repairing and maintaining plant, services and equipment
  • Good understanding of Health and Safety at work, including Risk assessment and control measures including PPE requirements and specific Hazards relevant to the work activities


  • Working knowledge and experience of other trades' skills
  • Working knowledge and experience of: Air conditioning and refrigeration, MPHW & steam boilers and systems, Electronics, Building Management Systems (BMS), Control Systems, Emergency electrical generating and standby plant including UPS, High voltage systems, Sterilizers, Piped Medical Gas Systems, Pneumatics and fire alarm Systems
