This 8 PA post is focussed on supporting the prosthetics service, then themajor trauma network with additional activities with the intrathecal baclofen pump service and community neurorehabilitation. Opportunities to work in the inpatient rehabilitation wards (neurorehabilitation and stroke rehabilitation) and spinal pathway can be considered in the future.

The two main healthcare providers in Plymouth are the University Hospitals Plymouth (UHP) NHS Trust, that runs most of the inpatient services and the acute hospital, and Livewell Southwest (LSW), social enterprise providing integrated health and social care services that also manages some inpatients units (e.g.: mental health and neurorehabilitation).

The right person for the job will have broad rehab medicine skills and a CCT/CESR in rehabilitation medicine with an interest in prosthetics and major trauma.

Joining the team you will be an expert in your area with broad rehab medicine skills and a CCT/CESR in rehabilitation medicine with an interest in prosthetics and major trauma. You will be able to provide completely person centred care, instinctively involving patients in decisions regarding their care in a mix of inpatient and community settings. You will be an integral part of a wider team who are committed to providing a new, integrated approach to prosthetic rehabilitation across the acute and community providers in Plymouth.

Main duties of the job

This job spans 2 main teams - mostly involved with the prosthetics service and secondarily with the acute hospital major trauma team. Professional support comes from the Rehabilitation Medicine colleagues: one consultant to be mostly based at University Hospital Plymouth with cross cover on the planned activities and two consultants based at Mount Gould Community Hospital.

The consultant job plans are based on a 7.5:2.5 DCC:SPA ration. There are additional opportunities in medical education and the rehabilitation medicine services already provided (outpatients, spasticity etc).

Your peer support will be in our community physicians and rehabilitation medicine group unified by the care of people, outside the acute hospital, limited by frailty, neurological or severe illness. We are proud to be a group of doctors with a mix of specialty backgrounds, working patterns and interests. You will, however, also be part of the networks of physicians and surgeons working with our shared client group.

Our community group has close relationships to other teams such as adult psychiatry, community therapy, crisis response and long term condition nurses. We all use one electronic record system which is also shared with many local GP surgeries. This makes joined up care a reality.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • MRCP (UK) or equivalent.
  • CCT/CESR in Rehabilitation Medicine (or within six months).


Desirable

  • Higher qualifications in rehabilitation.
  • Qualifications in teaching and learning.


Experience

Essential

  • Training and wide experience in the field of rehab medicine.
  • Secure background general medical experience and competency to manage on-call emergencies at senior level (if on-call).
  • Experience of working with managers to improve patient experience and service delivery.
  • Experience in clinical audit.
  • Understanding of clinical research.
  • Understanding of teaching principles for undergraduate, postgraduate and interdisciplinary learners.
  • Proven ability to motivate, support and work within a multi-disciplinary team.
  • High professional and ethical standards.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • A commitment to continuous professional development.
  • Basic computer/IT skills.


Desirable

  • Ability to manage limb spasticity with botulinum toxin injections.
  • A special interest or advanced experience in prosthetics, major trauma.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the NHS.
  • Evidence of service development and enacting change.
  • Ability to lead clinical services.
  • Relevant published papers in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Experience in teaching, particularly at a multi-professional level and of undergraduates.
  • An enthusiasm to develop research opportunities.
  • Proven ability to organise and prioritise workload, delegating as appropriate and supervising staff.
  • Willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional and national levels.
  • Ability to balance competing pressures that come from holding more than one role.
