An exciting opportunity has arisen for a suitably qualified and experienced Biomedical Scientist to join our Virology team in Hull on a permanent basis as our Chief Biomedical Scientist.

This is a full time role which will require an element of flexibility on a day to basis.

This is a permanent position and would suit applicants with the appropriate level of virology, molecular and managerial knowledge and experience.

Main duties of the job

To be responsible for the day-to-day technical and scientific operational management within Virology.

Play a key role in the provision of an efficient, high quality diagnostic service.

To be involved in shaping the strategic development of the department in consultation with the Head Biomedical Scientist.

To interpret and implement policies and procedures in order to meet the demands of the service.

Directly line manager all non-medical staff

Ensure efficient planning, prioritisation and allocation of workload.

Person Specification

Experience

Essential

  • Training and supervising a team
  • Minimum of 6 years post HPC registration
  • Previous experience working at a senior level in a UKAS accredited Virology Laboratory
  • Working alone during an out-of-hours service
  • Experience at recruiting staff
  • Experience of using technical and scientific knowledge to assess new and existing systems and processes to innovate and initiate change in laboratory practice


Desirable

  • Experience of business management including price setting, budgets and liaising with customers


Skills, Knowledge and ability

Essential

  • Knowledge of virology techniques
  • Knowledge of molecular diagnostic techniques
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety requirements, procedures and legislation including use of PPE
  • Understands microbiology/virology and its application in clinical practice and public health


Qualifications

Essential

  • BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science or equivalent
  • MSc in Biomedical Science (or related subject) or equivalent
  • Registered with the Health Professions Council
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
  • Evidence of management training or qualification


Desirable

  • Fellowship of the Institute of Biomedical Sciences
