We are looking for a dynamic, enthusiastic and motivated individual to join the Trust in the role of General Manager for the MSK & Therapies CSU.

This is a unique opportunity to support the Clinical Director in defining, shaping and developing the Clinical Service Units identity whilst simultaneously driving forward the Trust's strategy in respect of clinical transformation and performance improvement

With overarching responsibility for the safe, high quality delivery of Trauma & Orthopaedics, Plastics, Breast, Dermatology, Rheumatology and Therapy Services, the post holder will provide strong and professional leadership to the administrative, operational and clinical teams they manage. This will be delivered with the support of the Deputy and Service Managers. They will work in partnership with the other General/Service Managers and Clinical Leads to develop, deliver and sustain innovative and effective management systems to ensure maximum operational efficiency across all areas.

You will engage all staff groups in the development, delivery and sustainment of innovative and effective management systems to ensure maximum operational efficiency within the trust and proactively identify opportunities for improvements in relation to efficient theatre capacity.

Focus will be on the safe delivery of care in conjunction with the achievement of operational and constitutional performance targets including finance.

Person Specification



  • Significant management experience in the acute sector.
  • Proven track record of meeting internally and externally generated targets.
  • Experience, understanding and implementation of the modernisation agenda and the opportunities for redesigning services.
  • Experience, knowledge and understanding of current issues/themes affecting the NHS locally and nationally
  • Experience in the delivery of tangible quality and financial benefits using structured tools and techniques of service improvement, such as Lean and Six Sigma.
  • Proven success at managing complex programmes of organisational change while maintaining service quality.
  • Experience of staff management, including the setting of objectives, team and individual appraisal, recruitment and disciplinary issues.
  • Budget management experience, including reducing costs/ efficiency gains, monitoring and determining corrective action.
  • Experience in report writing and delivering presentations, to include development of business cases and formal presentations.
  • Experience of managing clinical pathways and implementing pathway changes in order to meet national access standards.
  • Experience of developing and implementing strategic plans at service level that enables the attainment of Division objectives.


  • Experience of Theatres and Anaesthesia
  • Experience of working across networks, with wide ranging stakeholders.
  • Experience of best practice process improvement techniques across a range of sectors.
  • Experience in contract negotiation with a range of commissioning bodies



  • Full range of IT skills including spreadsheet analysis.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of staff with different levels of responsibility and professional backgrounds
  • The ability to deal with complex issues in a large organisation.
  • Detailed understanding of all access targets and their application in managing patient pathways
  • Ability to work pro-actively and cooperatively with senior management and clinical staff, including at times of high levels of pressure.



  • Understanding of recommendations from Francis, Keogh and other patient experience and quality of care directives and measures.



  • Healthcare related Degree/Diploma or professional qualification/registration in either Nursing, Physiotherapy. Occupational Therapy or Management
  • Additional specialist knowledge or training to master's level or equivalent experience
  • Evidence of continuous professional development


  • Project management experience, Prince 2 or other project management qualification



  • To participate in the Senior Manager (Silver) On-Call Rota
