This is an exciting opportunity to join the Autism and Related Disorders (ARD) Team. The ARD Team is currently recruiting to a full time, fixed term Band 8a Clinical Psychology position (until the end of May 2023) to cover a period of maternity leave. Expressions of interest in a secondment to the service are also welcomed.

The ARD Team is one of four streams within the exciting and developing National and Specialist CAMHS Service for Complex Autism and Associated Neurodevelopmental Disorders (SCAAND). The post holder will play an integral role in the provision of assessment, intervention, supervision and service evaluation and development to meet the needs of young people and their families.

Main duties of the job

The postholder in this fixed term Band 8a Clinical Psychology post will work closely with the multi-disciplinary team within the Autism and Related Disorders (ARD) Team to provide specialist and comprehensive assessment and evidence-based interventions for children and young people with complex neurodevelopmental conditions and associated mental health difficulties.

About us

The ARD Team is a supportive multi-disciplinary team including a Consultant Psychiatrist and Consultant Clinical Psychologist, Principal Clinical Psychologist, 2 Senior Clinical Psychologists, Band 7 Clinical Psychologist, Assistant Psychologist, an Occupational Therapist and Speech and Language Therapist, an NAS Specialist Consultant Teacher and a both a Team Administrator and an Administrator with Assistant Psychologist Duties. There are close links with the 3 other streams within SCAAND, as well as opportunities for collaboration with other National and Specialist CAMHS teams regarding group interventions. The team facilitates placements and teaching for those training within clinical psychology, psychiatry and occupational therapy.

About our location:

The fixed term post within the ARD Team is based at the Michael Rutter Centre for Children and Young People, on the Maudsley Hospital site in South London. Our Trust headquarters is located at Denmark Hill less than 5 minutes from the train station (zone 2) and is within walking distance from the beautiful green spaces of Ruskin park and the vibrant high-street that offers great shopping opportunities and with a wide range of restaurants. The team are currently working a mix of both on site and remote working from home. The role will require travel to clients in the community e.g. home visits, schools or community bases as appropriate and across the Trust and nationally when required.

This fixed term post involves a balanced combination of multi-disciplinary assessment work with young people with complex needs (including ADOS-2 assessments, cognitive, psychometric and neuropsychological testing and also young person and parent interviews) and intervention cases within a CAMHS outpatient model. Intervention is varied, ranging from direct work with young people with a range of presentations and needs, work with their parents or carers and joint work with other disciplines such as consultations to the local network. Given the complex nature of young people seen in our service, time is made for complex formulation meetings. The ARD Team also provides professional consultations to other agencies or services around the child or adolescent and their family. The post holder will have opportunities for supervision with an Assistant Psychologist or a trainee psychologist within the team.

Person Specification Qualifications Essential

• oClinical Psychologist: Doctorate in Clinical Psychology or equivalent
• oAdditional training in a specialised area of psychological practice with children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorders and associated neurodevelopmental conditions or challenging behaviours (e.g. CBT, functional analysis of challenging behaviour, positive behavioural support) through formal post-qualification training (PG Diploma or equivalent), OR a combination of specialist short courses.
• oRegistered with the HCPC as Practitioner Psychologist, and evidence of continuing professional development as required by the HCPC

Desirable

• oTo have completed training in autism specific assessments e.g. ADOS-2, ADI-R.

Understanding and Knowledge Essential

• oKnowledge of the theory and practice of specialised psychological assessments and interventions for children and young people with autism spectrum disorders and associated neurodevelopmental conditions including intellectual disability and co-morbid mental health disorders, such as anxiety and depression
• oAdvanced knowledge of psychological assessment, clinical psychometrics with children and young people and knowledge of how this applies to young people with autism spectrum disorders and associated neurodevelopmental conditions including intellectual disability

Experience Essential

• oEvidence of having worked as a qualified clinical specialist, under supervision, with children and young people with neurodevelopmental disorders including autism
• oExperience of specialist psychological assessment and treatment of clients with a range of psychological needs of a complex nature in CAMHS services for children and young people with autism spectrum disorders and associated neurodevelopmental conditions including intellectual disability and mental health difficulties including anxiety and depression
• oExperience of supervising assistant and trainee psychologists having completed the relevant training
• oExperience of carrying out post-doctoral research, audit or service evaluation projects

Desirable

• oExperience in supervision of band 7 Clinical Psychologists

Skills Essential

• oTo select and administer specialist psychological assessments, interpreting and integrating complex data that require analysis, interpretation and comparison, drawn from several sources
• oTo be skilled in the administration of cognitive, psychometric and neuropsychological tests, including those that require complex manipulation of test materials
