An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 7 Specialist Speech and Language Therapist to join the older adult/adult Urgent Care Mental Health Service in Dudley and Walsall. This is a permanent, full time post, we will consider candidates who have band 6 experience but are enthusiastic and want to fulfil leadership competencies with training and support to gain a band 7 post within an compressed timeframe. The post is to provide a dysphagia and communication service, supporting leads in informing the future growth and development of the service.

We are looking for an enthusiastic qualified Speech and Language Therapist to join our supportive AHP Team. This varied and rewarding role involves proving a Speech and Language Therapy Service to adults and older adults within urgent care mental health services (adult and older adult wards). The post is based in Dudley but you will also be providing a service to the inpatient mental health wards in Walsall.

We welcome applicants who may not currently be working within mental health but have a keen interest and motivation to work with this client group and have the transferrable skills required. Post graduate training in dysphagia is essential.

Main duties of the job

  • The post-holder has responsibility to provide specialist Speech and Language Therapy assessment and intervention to adults over the age of 18 with a mental health need and development of the Speech and Language Therapy team in the adult and older adult mental health service in the divisions.

Job description Job responsibilities

  • The post-holder provides both direct and indirect intervention, consultation, advice and support; working within a multi-disciplinary model in order to ensure that the inter-agency needs of clients are met.
  • The post-holder undertakes advisory work, second opinions and provides peer review and advice within his/her area of expertise to support and develop the clinical skills of other staff.
  • The post- holder provides clinical supervision for and day-to-day management of SLT clinical staff.
  • The post-holder liaises both orally and in writing with any significant others involved in the management of the client, within and outside the NHS, to ensure the clients needs are met effectively and efficiently.
  • The post-holder takes an active role in clinical multi-disciplinary formulation where speech and language therapy recommendations contribute to the holistic management of a patient to optimise clinical input.
  • The post-holder is responsible for the day-to-day running of the team systems including referrals to the team including team allocation, prioritisation, throughput, discharges, data collection, analysis and performance to key team targets.
  • The post-holder is responsible for managing his/her own caseload and oversight of team caseloads, including clinical administration and appointments, in order to meet access criteria and ensure a cost-effective, quality service.
  • The post-holder has autonomous responsibility for maintaining accurate and contemporaneous (within 12 hours) client records, in order to ensure compliance with departmental, professional and legal requirements.
