About the team: Denbigh is a 14 bed assessment and treatment ward for patients who have a primary diagnosis of dementia and behaviours that challenge. Our philosophy of care is to understand that the patient living with dementia is a unique individual with his or her own preferences, needs and life story. We have very dedicated multicultural team of staff who provides high standards of care to our patients and treat team members with care and respect.

Main duties of the job

About the role: The ideal candidate will have a commitment to teamwork, a sense of accountability, plus an ability to work under pressure. The post holder will provide quality evidence-based nursing advice, support and care for service users with mental and physical health needs and to their carers within a multidisciplinary setting. You will be responsible for leading on the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing care on shifts, and will have a good level of knowledge of local, national policies and legislation which govern current service provision.

The post holder will be responsible for identifying and contributing to the training needs of junior registered and unregistered staff and ensure that issues of equality, diversity and rights are dealt with in accordance with good practice and legislation. You will ensure that effective communication pathways exist, and act within your sphere of responsibility, leading the night shift in the absence of the Clinical Nurse Specialist, Ward Manager or the designated deputy. To support the manager with auditing, datix reviewing , health roster updates, staff supervisions and appraisals. Deputy ward manger is expected to lead the team in absence of Ward manager and promotes quality improvement projects. To be able to deal with complaints and safeguarding concerns effectively.

  • To be responsible for supervising the role of the named nurses in relation to care planning within the clinical area.
  • To be responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of the evidence based care required, including health promotion for a named service user/group ensuring it meets Trust timescales.
  • To participate in the setting of quality standards, including the monitoring and reviewing in line with current clinical guidance practice and policy.
  • Utilising the data available such as learning from incidences and complaints.
  • To ensure the post holder understands and meets their professional role and responsibilities under the Care Programme Approach.
  • To ensure that the requirements of the Mental Health Act 2007 are observed, adhered to and implemented.
  • To be responsible for the promotion of carer and service user involvement within the service and for its provision. To encourage recovery, discovery and independence, taking into account risk assessment and management.
  • To be responsible for establishing therapeutic relationships with service users, and the implementation of evidence based therapeutic interventions with appropriate boundaries in accordance with Nursing and Midwifery Councils professional code of conduct.
  • To ensure the provision of social/therapeutic activities for service users.
  • To be responsible for the safe custody and administration of medicines inaccordance with all medicine policies and ensure compliance is maintained.

Person Specification Education & Qualifications Essential
  • Registered Nurse Mental Health (RNMH) or other specialism relating to post such as Registered Nurse Learning Disability (RNLD) or Registered Nurse Children's (RNC)
  • NMC registration Evidence of Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
  • Mentor qualification / ENB 998 or equivalent
Desirable
  • Post graduate qualification related to ward specialism Additional qualification for specialism
Experience Essential
  • Experience of inpatient services and working as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Basic training in the Mental Capacity Act
  • Experience of providing mentorship
  • Experience of supervising staff
  • Experience of dealing with service users with complex mental health needs
Desirable
  • Previous experience of undertaking Continuing Care Assessments
  • Experience of developing service user and carer involvement
  • Experience relating to ward specialism
  • Lived experience of mental health needs
