An exciting opportunity has been created for a Nurse Non-Medical Prescriber working in a full time position within our Thanet Community Mental Health Team (CMHT).

The post holder must hold a relevant prescribing qualification and some experience of prescribing is desirable but not essentially needed as KMPT offers a brilliant prescribing network which is robustly governed and supports staff working in this field of nursing.

Main duties of the job

The nurse will need to hold a qualification as a Non-Medical Prescriber and will be undertaking independent prescribing practice working alongside the medical team at theCMHT, which is part of theCommunity RecoveryCare Group.

The post holder will be expected to provide assessment and treatment, including the prescribing of medications. The role will focus on working in the outpatient clinics working alongside the Consultant psychiatrists, reviewing and adjusting medication as part of the prescribing practice through the use of the clinical management plan.

The post holder will be an experiencedNon-medical Prescriber with specialist knowledge and be able to provide advice to GPs andother relevant professionals and service users on mental health medications.

The post holder will contribute to governance and audit, ensuring that service delivery focuses on the quality agenda and that dignity, privacy and respect is afforded at all times to service users.

Job description Job responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities
  • To undertake a full holistic assessment (with a focus on physical health improvement), liaising and referring to other agencies and professionals as necessary. Undertake reviews of medicines and promote patient choice and effective outcomes.
  • To develop and use diagnostic skills, initiate investigation, prescribing care and treatment as appropriate.
  • To facilitate and / or provide health promotion and education.
  • To provide expert clinical advice and work collaboratively with other health professionals and agencies

  • Education and Development
  • To independently prescribe medication within a defined scope of practice.
  • To attend mandatory training annually which will include a regular competency assessment of prescribing knowledge and practice.
  • To ensure at least 4 weekly supervision of prescribing practice and annual review of all prescriptions written, competencies (using RPS standards) and scope of practice
  • To undertake regular CPD including up to five study days per year and attending medical CPD sessions

    Person Specification Qualification Essential
    • 1st Level Nurse RMN
    • BSc(Hons) Nurse Practitioner or equivalent
    • Non Medical Prescribing Course
    Experience Essential
    • 5 years Band 6 or above
    • Medicine management
    • Experience of working either in Community, Primary Care or A&E
    • Experience of undertaking comprehensive assessment of clients with undifferentiated diagnosis
    • Experience of Research and Development and Audit
    Desirable
    • Supply and administration of medicines under Patient Group Directions, Supplementary and if agreed, Independent prescribing.
    Knowledge, Skills & Ability Essential
    • Broad understanding of multi- professional roles within primary and community services
    • Excellent communications skills both written and verbal
    • Demonstrate leadership characteristics and work well within a team
    • Able to demonstrate sound clinical decision making under pressure
    Desirable
    • Assessment and management of acute mental illnesses or relapse, prescribing and providing treatment to minimize the impact of the illness.
