An EXCITING opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated Band 6 Occupational Therapist to join our innovative and dynamic team at the North London Forensic Service (NLFS).

The post holder will work as a member of the Occupational Therapy team with the North London Forensic Service (NLFS). The NLFS provides medium and low secure in-patient services for those suffering from mental illness and/or learning disabilities, forensic intensive care unit and forensic outreach services.

The post will involve delivery of the OT provision to a designated caseload, focusing on functional daily living skills and specific mental health and risk issues. This will include the assessment, treatment and evaluation of clinical interventions, planning and running a range of therapeutic individual and group work, carrying out functional assessments and contributing to multidisciplinary team care planning and risk assessment. The patients are people with diverse needs and presentations, often with psychotic symptoms, secondary diagnosis of personality disorder and can exhibit aggressive behaviour and poor insight.

The post holder will work closely with the Multi-Disciplinary Team and relevant outside agencies to provide a quality service, which is responsive to client's needs. The post holder will also be responsible for supervising, supporting and developing junior staff.

Main duties of the job

  • To assess client's needs, establish aims and objectives, and plan their Occupational Therapy treatment programme.
  • To carry out a range of standardised/non-standardised/functional assessments or interviews, including MOHOST and establish aims and objectives.
  • To manage a designated caseload in response to patient groups needs
  • To attend multi-disciplinary clinical meetings, to support and share information regarding professional practice with other disciplines and work in collaboration to provide a coordinated package of care.
  • To actively contribute to the risk assessment process
  • To ensure that relevant records, reports and treatment statistics are produced to a competent standard in line with professional guidelines.
  • To lead a small OT team made up of Band 5 OT's and TI staff; including coordinated intervention and therapeutic timetables across a number of wards.
  • To be involved in the development of service provision for the department and wider trust.

The North London Forensic Service is an OUTSTANDING service as rated by the CQC. We are an ever growing, innovative service who pride ourselves on being service user led. We champion experts by experience and have a department dedicated to this alone.

Our OT department is resourced with a recreational centre which includes 2 gyms, a sports hall, pottery room, music/recording studio, IT suite, horticulture garden, ADL kitchen, tennis court, carpentry and mechanics workshop, a service user lounge, cafe and shop. Some of the groups that run from the centre include pet therapy, plumbing and motorbike repair/maintenance.

We also have a co-produced Recovery College which delivers workshops and classes (such as yoga, drama skills and mindfulness to name a few!) to service users as well as staff.

The occupational therapy team is a large department and has ever expanding opportunities for learning and career development, some of which include:-
  • Extensive training opportunities including: AMPs, Sensory Integration training, RAID, Trauma informed Care, VdTMoCA.

Person Specification EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS Essential
  • Dip. COT or BSc OT
  • Registered with HCPC
  • Evidence of CPD/reflective practice.
Desirable
  • Masters or post graduate papers in relevant areas.
  • Further relevant training or study.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS Essential
  • Able to participate in breakaway training.
  • Good general health record.
Desirable
  • Ably to complete full PMCB course.
EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE Essential
  • Post graduate experience of working with people with mental health conditions relevant to specialty of post.
  • Effective verbal communication skills to include presentation of O.T. information to MD team.
Desirable
  • Experience of presenting at local, regional or national conferences/seminars/workshops etc.
  • Experience in promoting and/or contributing to formal education of OT students e.g. workshops, presenting at open days etc.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES Essential
  • Effective IT skills; namely email and word.
  • Experience of planning and running a range of therapeutic groups.
Desirable
  • Experience of working in Forensic environments.
  • Experience in supervising and appraising junior staff and students.
PERSONAL QUALITIES Essential
  • Commitment to work as a proactive team member.
  • Ability to be flexible and adaptable to manage fluctuating work demands.
Desirable
  • Ability to promote positive image of OT.
  • Experience with service user involvement.
