Ashford is a learning disability low secure forensic hospital for males aged 18-65 years. It is located near Totton and sits on a site with other specialist hospitals. Ashford is a new purpose-built hospital that provides specialist care and treatment for people with a mild learning disability, often complicated with a mental health diagnosis, in a low secure environment. Service Users are detained under the Mental Health Act. The Occupational Therapy staff work closely with other members of the multi-disciplinary team to provide an innovative range of services, focusing on recovery.

Ashford low secure unit are looking to appoint a motivated, enthusiastic, and hardworking Occupational Therapist.

The post requires someone who is passionate about providing the best care to the service users, to complement the existing team of occupational therapy staff, who are recognised for innovative and dynamic work. The main purpose of the unit is to assist Service Users to understand and better manage themselves in terms of health, risks and levels of independence, so that where possible, they can be reintegrated back into the community. This is achieved through a range of treatments, therapies and services; which are provided by the Multi-Disciplinary Team. Treatment is tailored to meet the individual needs of the Service User. Therapeutic interventions will include a combination of one-to-one and group therapy.



The Role

You will work as part of the Occupational Therapy team and become a valued member of the multi-disciplinary team. You will carry out assessment, interventions and discharge planning for a caseload of patients. The Occupational Therapy service uses the VdT Model of Creative Ability, for which you will receive relevant training. There are opportunities for you to get involved in a variety of project work and research.



The Hours

The successful candidate will work 30 hours per week with flexibility on how this can be provided on a Monday to Friday week, the usual therapy hours are 8:00 and 16:00.



A Forensic Lead Payment

Working for Specialised Services means you will receive an extra payment of £1,400.00 per year (pro rata) in addition to your salary.



Annual Leave Entitlement – very generous holiday (pro rata)
  • On appointment = 27 days per year + bank holidays
  • After 5 years’ NHS service = 29 days per year + bank holidays
  • After 10 years’ NHS service = 33 days per year +bank holidays
