This is a replacement post. The post is located at Roseberry Park Hospital, Middlesbrough, where inpatient forensic beds and clinical and managerial offices are all co-located.

The post covers 2 wards: The first is Mallard, a 14 bed low secure ward for older males (age over 55 years) with mental health diagnoses and co morbid complex physical health problems. The average length of stay is greater than 5 years. Over the past 2 years there has been 5 referrals, 3 admission and 6 discharges. The ward is also able to provide palliative care with support from local community palliative care services. The second is Sandpiper, an 8 bed female medium secure admission ward. The average length of stay is 1 year, but some patients require longer admission. In the past 2 years there have been 11 referrals, 7 admissions and 2 discharges.

Main duties of the job

Mallard is a 14 bed low secure ward for older males with co morbid complex physical health problems. There is a full MDT for the ward. There will be a requirement to attend weekly MDT meetings, undertake structured assessments, prepare reports for CPA’s and other meetings.

Sandpiper is an 8 bed female medium admission ward. There is a full MDT for the ward. There will be a requirement to attend weekly MDT meetings, undertake structured assessments, prepare reports for CPA’s and other meetings.

The specialty doctor will be expected to be part of committed, proactive and responsive clinical leadership working with the in-patient MDT team. The specialty doctor will attend brief daily multidisciplinary meetings and/or ward rounds as appropriate, when decisions are made about patient care and the management plans, risk and leave arrangements are reviewed.

The speciality doctor will attend and contribute fully to formulation and risk management meetings. The specialty doctor will attend the discharge planning meetings and be involved in the development of the integrated pathway of care for each individual patient based on a Recovery Approach.

Person Specification Teaching & Training Essential
  • Able to deliver undergraduate or postgraduate teaching and training.
Desirable
  • Evidence of achievement in education, research, audit and service improvement: awards, prizes, presentations and publications.
CPD & Appraisal Essential
  • Participated in continuous professional development.
  • Evidence of annual appraisal and commitment to appraisal and revalidation.
Qualifications Essential
  • MB BS or equivalent medical qualification.
  • Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of appointment.
  • At least 4 years postgraduate experience, including at least 2 years in a core psychiatry training programme in UK or abroad
  • Approved under S12 of MHA OR able to achieve within 6 months of appointment.
Desirable
  • MRCPsych or equivalent postgraduate qualification.
Clinical Knowledge & Skills Essential
  • Good knowledge of psychiatry.
  • Excellent clinical skills using bio-psycho-social perspective and wide medical knowledge.
Desirable
  • Able to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty.
Research, Audit & Quality Improvement Essential
  • Has actively participated in clinical audit.
