Newham's Speech and Language Therapy service has some exciting news to share! Our team is expanding following an unprecedented investment of 20 new posts across all bandings in April 2022. We are looking for SLTs to join our growing and supportive team.

We have an exciting opportunity for a Speech and Language Therapist with specialist skills, knowledge and interest in paediatric complex needs and dysphagia within the community setting to join our expanding team of 10 Complex needs and dysphagia SLTs!

Main duties of the job

The Complex Needs and Dysphagia SLT team offers specialist assessment and intervention for babies, children and young people aged 0-19. Children and families are supported in a variety of settings including clinic-based visits to the child development centre (CDC), home visits offered as necessary, nurseries and school settings.

Within the CDC the team work closely with multidisciplinary partners such as Dieticians, Paediatricians, Occupational Therapists, Specialist Nurses, and has established close working links to local tertiary hospital specialist Medical teams including, but not limited to, ENT, Respiratory, Gastroenterology and Neurology.

The post-holder will manage their own caseload of children with complex communication needs and dysphagia. There will be opportunity for service improvement and development working alongside colleagues.

The successful applicant will be motivated and passionate about working with children and families within the specialism of complex needs communication and dysphagia.

Based at the child development centre, in Stratford in the London Borough of Newham, close to the Olympic Park in the heart of Londons East End (with excellent transport links with the rest of London and Essex). The childrens speech and language therapy service has a strong multi-agency work ethic with other services both within the trust and with partner agencies, and offers services across a wide range of care groups in the borough.

Person Specification Education/ Qualification/ Training Essential
  • Recognised Speech and Language Therapy degree qualification or equivalent
  • Health Professions Council - Licence to Practice
  • Evidence of successful completion of specialist short courses
Experience Essential
  • Relevant experience at undergraduate/post graduate level
  • Relevant experience post-registration in paediatrics
  • Relevant experience in complex needs communication and dysphagia
Knowledge and Skills Essential
  • Excellent interpersonal skills - including observation, listening and empathy skills
  • Negotiation and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrates good analytical and reflection skills
  • Well-developed concentration skills Good presentation skills, both written and verbal, including ability to write clear and concise reports

  • Good auditory discrimination skills and ability to transcribe speech phonetically
