CAMHS Crisis and Home Treatment Team

Band 8a (or band 7 preceptorship until qualified for two years)

37.5 hours per week - permanent

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced clinical psychologist to take up a senior position with the CAMHS Crisis and Home Treatment Team within South Bedfordshire CAMHS. The Post holder would work within a Crisis and Home Treatment Multi-Disciplinary Team including a Clinical Team Lead, Professional Lead, CAMHS Consultant Psychiatrist, 8b Clinical Psychologist, Band 7 Senior Mental Practitioners and Senior Support Workers.

The position is funded to band 8a but also available for less experienced psychologists on a preceptorship basis, paid at band 7 until two years post qualified. Support and funding for training will be provided to a band 7 to enable the move to band 8a at that time.

Main duties of the job

The post is located within the CAMHS Crisis and Home Treatment services offering therapeutic work to families with specific emphasis on adolescents with complex and severe mental health problems, and a wider comprehensive specialist CAMH service offering a stepped model of mental health care. It will include the provision of specialist advice/consultation, psychological assessment, liaison with other agencies, clinical psychology interventions, clinical supervision and teaching of staff and/or students.

We are looking for someone who is an experienced clinical psychologist with a substantial knowledge in the field of child and adolescent mental health, especially in the areas of adolescent mental health and crisis / risk management. In addition to contributing to the operational delivery of the Crisis and Home Treatment Teams, the post holder will be responsible for the supervision/management of Band 7 and other staff as required. The post holder will formulate and undertake clinical audit, service evaluation, service development and research activities as directed by the Clinical Team Lead.

Job description Job responsibilities

The post holder will need to work flexibly, and be able to provide the appropriate contextualised formulation-based intervention, using the evidence base and have the ability to design individually tailored intervention program based on client need, clear analysis of causes of symptomatology and a formulation based and trauma-informed approach, using evidence-based components, and apply regular validated outcome measures. The post holder will contribute to service rotas including triage and self-harm rotas. You will provide evidence based interventions including individual work, group work and other evidence based interventions.

This post is based in South Bedfordshire covering the areas of Luton and Dunstable and surrounding area. The posts base is close to the M1 and easily reached by rail and car from North London, Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Northamptonshire. The clinic also has the added benefit of free parking and all clinicians are supported by very dedicated and efficient administrative staff. Whilst some of the work is based in the clinic, access to a car is essential as some travel will be required to respond to presentations at Luton and Dunstable General Hospital and to undertake outreach support at home or other CAMHS/multi-agency sites.

Person Specification Education/ Qualification/ Training Essential
  • Minimum: First degree in Psychology (BSc).
  • Three year Postgraduate Doctorate in Clinical or Counselling Psychology (or its equivalent for those trained prior to 1996) as accredited by the HPC, covering all care groups
  • Clinical supervision training for Doctoral trainees. Registration with HCPC
  • Training in at least two therapeutic approaches and basic neuropsychological training.
Experience Essential
  • Work as a qualified Clinical Psychologist for a minimum of two years including relevant experience - working with young people with psychosis and emerging personality disorder. Emergency assessments and crisis intervention work.
  • Experience of providing care coordination
  • Experience of providing a direct clinical service, including specialist assessment, psychological formulation of problems and intervention (minimum 500 hours supervised practice), offering interventions in an individual al, family-based or group-based formats.
  • Relevant experience with young people and their families/ carers and wider professional network with severe and complex adolescent mental health difficulties
  • Experience of participating in Quality Improvement, audit, evaluation and research activities.
  • Additional relevant clinical and / or managerial knowledge and skills acquired through formal training, long or short courses, formal supervision (individual and/or group), structured self-study or experience (or a combination of these) to an appropriate level approved by the Head of Psychology and demonstrated by certification, documented supervision logs, management appraisal documentation and/or assessment at interview. This will include supervision training and a minimum of 500 hours of supervised clinical practice.
Knowledge & Skills Essential
  • Able to provide a highly specialist clinical service, including specialist assessments, formulation and therapy from at least two therapeutic modalities.
  • Able to supervise trainee and assistant psychologists and members of other staff groups.
  • Able to design and deliver teaching/training programmes to a range of staff groups.
  • Knowledge of the Children's Act, Mental Health Act, CPA legislation and national treatment guidelines
  • Communication & Relationship skills: Able to provide & receive highly complex, sensitive or contentious information in a highly emotive and sometimes hostile atmosphere, in a range of relationships and settings including emergencies. Able to use highly specialist skills of empathy to overcome barriers to understanding and acceptance.
  • Analytical & judgmental skills: Able to draw upon a broad theoretical knowledge base in the analysis of highly complex facts or situations to arrive at appropriate formulations. Able to compare and select from a range of treatment options, based on a contextualised formulation.
  • Planning and organisational skills: Able to plan, organise and prioritise own workload.
  • Physical skills: Basic keyboard skills.
  • Information resources: Able to record and report on as required clinical information.
  • Competent in use of basic IT packages - word processing, e-mail and internet.
  • Research & Guidance: Doctoral level knowledge of research design and methodology, including complex multivariate data analysis.
  • Up to date knowledge of psychological research and national guidance relevant to the client groups. Knowledge of legislation and its implications for clinical practice with the client groups.
  • Cultural awareness: Aware of the potential impact of discrimination & disadvantage on mental health.
  • Able to provide a cultural competent service
  • Flexibility: Able to be flexible and adapt approach according to need.
