Clinical or Counselling Psychologist, Band 8A OR Band 7 (Preceptorship)
We are seeking to recruit a creative and forward-thinking Clinical or Counselling Psychologist for our Crisis Resolution and Home Treatment Team (CRHTT) in Bromley.This role is offered either as a Band 8a or as a preceptorship to recently qualified clinicians who wish to transition swiftly to an 8a AfC pay band once certain skills have been acquired. This process will be closely and supportively monitored in collaboration with professional leads via routine reviews to ensure competency requirements and personal progression are being addressed to facilitate progression.
In addition, the post comes with agreed funding for the 3-part EMDR training and specialist EMDR supervision both of which are pre-requisites for gaining EMDR practitioner status. This is to allow for professional development in a specialist psychological therapy as well as to support the implementation of a crisis-based trauma-focused treatment service currently being developed in our acute and crisis secondary care Bromley MH services. This presents an interesting opportunity of providing brief and intensive trauma-focused interventions for people in crisis services. It follows recent evidence into the efficacy of crisis based EMDR traumafocused treatment and the benefits of early intervention in trauma.
Main duties of the job
The post is located at Greenparks House in Bromley and involves interfacing with both community and inpatient mental health services as well as the acute hospital (Princess Royal University Hospital - PRUH).
The CRHTT is a vibrant, friendly and highly skilled MDT consisting of mental health nurses, support workers and psychiatrists and includes the Crisis Therapy Group service (CTG) that offers DBT-informed group-based interventions for people presenting in crisis. The team values psychology greatly and has strong links with both the mental health liaison team and the inpatient wards which are located within Green Parks House. In addition to being part of this team, the post holder will join and be supported by an experienced team of psychologists working in the acutewards and in mental health liaison.
Within our crisis and acute inpatient psychology team, there is great interest in promoting trauma-informed and systemic ways of working with people presenting in crisis and their carers/families. We would therefore welcome clinicians who are interested in consolidating their skills in these approaches and contributing to their further expansion within crisis and acute mental health services in Bromley.

Clinical work will involve psychological assessments and the provision of brief psychological interventions for people with a wide range of psychological difficulties presenting in crisis. In conjunction with this work, an important part of the role will be consultative and include the provision of reflective practice groups, staff support, teaching and consultation to the team and CTG service. There will also be opportunities for teaching and supervising clinical psychology trainees from the Salomons D Clin Psy course. A contained caseload of other therapeutic interests would also be supported to maintain or develop other professional skills, e.g. a contained caseload of longer term psychotherapeutic interventions, or joining thesystemic family therapy service which runs in the acute and community teams.
There is an established psychological therapies service provision within Green Parks House and the post holder will have a supportive professional interface alongside the Principal Psychologist for Mental Health Liaison and the psychology team from the adult acute wards as well as close liaison with the adult community mental health team psychological therapists.

Person Specification TRAINING & QUALIFICATIONS Essential
- Doctoral level training in clinical or counselling psychology, including specifically models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics and neuropsychology, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology, as accredited by the BPS.
- Post-qualification training in DBT/MBT or other models appropriate for working with people with personality disorders/complex trauma Pre-qualification training and qualifications in research methodology, staff training and/or other fields of applied psychology.
- Experience of specialist psychological assessment and treatment of clients across the full range of care settings, including outpatient, community, primary care and in patient settings.
- Experience of working with a wide variety of client groups, across the whole life course presenting problems that reflect the full range of clinical severity including maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems, verbal abuse and the threat of physical abuse.
- Experience of teaching, training and/or supervision.
- Experience of the application of clinical psychology in different cultural contexts.
- Experience of working in crisis services
- Experience with people who self-harm, have a personality disorder (e.g. EUPD) and/or comorbid substance/alcohol misuse difficulties
- Experience of group work
- Skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment intervention and management frequently requiring sustained and intense concentration.
- Well-developed skills in the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, complex, highly technical and/or clinically sensitive information to clients, their families, carers and other professional colleagues both within and outside the NHS.
- Skills in providing consultation to other professional and non-professional groups.
- Doctoral level knowledge of research methodology, research design and complex, multivariate data analysis
- Knowledge of the theory and practice of specialised psychological therapies in groups which are difficult to treat or engage (e.g. severe psychosis, personality disorder, dual diagnoses, people with additional disabilities etc).
- High level knowledge of the theory and practice of at least two specialised psychological therapies
- Knowledge of legislation in relation to the client group and mental health
- Ability to teach and train others, using a variety of complex multi-media materials suitable for presentations within public, professional and academic settings.
- Ability to identify and employ mechanisms of clinical governance as appropriate. to support and maintain clinical practice in the face of regular exposure to highly emotive material and challenging behaviour.
