This is a wonderful opportunity for a Clinical Psychologist Band 8a (full time and part time opportunity) interested in perinatal mental health and wishing to develop specialist knowledge and practice in this rewarding field. We have recently been nominated for the NSFT 'Staff Excellence- Team of the Year' Award which we are very proud of and would love for you to come and join our dedicated and supportive team.

We welcome applicants from trainee clinical psychologists who are in their final year of training so we can offer as Band 7 Preceptorship post.

The team are a county wide service currently operating from a number of bases in the East and West of the county and involves some opportunities for remote working

What our team say:

I work within the Perinatal Mental Health Team and have been here from its infancy at around six months, when we were a Team of 4 (now nearly in double figures and expanding all the time). I cannot recommend this Team highly enough; I have seen real dedication and commitment from the Team over and above what is expected. The Team is extremely well led and we are proud of our Team Manager, and rightly proud of ourselves. We are supportive of each other and our service users at all times. The Perinatal Team make a real difference to the lives of our Service Users, their partners and their families. Do not hesitate to put yourself forward for interview; we would love to welcome you on board!

Main duties of the job

We are a countywide service, committed to improving the wellbeing of parents and their babies. We offer assessment and treatment to women with moderate to severe mental health difficulties who are either pregnant or within the first post-natal year (soon to be increasing to 24 months). You will be joining a newly established psychology team, consisting of two recently appointed 8b psychologists and an assistant psychologist that will soon be recruited. You will be supported to deliver formulation based and NICE recommended psychological interventions to women and their babies. This post would be suitable for anyone interested in models of adult mental health (such as CBT, systemic family therapy, IPT and CAT), transgenerational patterns of trauma, attachment, and infant mental health.

You shall contribute to the supervision, consultation and training of the MDT who consist of highly skilled and psychologically minded professionals and include perinatal mental health nurses, a psychiatrist, nursery nurses, peer support workers, a social worker, and an occupational therapist. Our team have very good working relationships with a wide range of primary and secondary care professionals, including midwives, health visitors, CAMHS and adult mental health services across Suffolk.

About us

The Long-Term Plan for Mental Health sets out national and local ambitions to improve care for people in pregnancy through the first stages of the baby's life who are experiencing, or at risk of experiencing, mental health difficulties.

One in five women experience post or ante natal depression, anxiety or in some cases psychosis, during pregnancy or in the first year after childbirth. Perinatal community mental health services provide specialist care for women (and their babies) with moderate to severe mental illness, such as bipolar disorder or severe depression. Our team aim to provide specialist care and early help to parents and babies to help with a range of perinatal issues including parent infant bonding. Members of our team are also involved in shaping trauma informed care in the perinatal period and thinking across wider services.

Job description
Job responsibilities

You will be joining us at a very exciting time as you will provide support on the NHS long-term plan ambitions to expand the availability of psychological therapies in perinatal teams. You will also help to shape the future maternal metal health team which will start to be developed towards the end of the year. We are incredibly passionate and supportive and there are some fantastic opportunities for continued professional development. The team have recently been trained in EMDR, VIG and DBT and there are many other opportunities to expand your skills. There is currently a significant amount of funding being provided to perinatal teams nationally, meaning that we can invest in our clinicians in line with emerging evidence and standards for parental mental illness.

We are committed to keeping the family at the centre of care and normalising the experience of pregnancy and becoming a parent. We have a philosophy of early intervention and ensure that we capture the babies voice in the work that we do. Our aim is to reduce barriers to accessing services and aim to empower and build confidence in our service users.

Research and QI opportunities are available and encouraged. Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust is the main provider of specialist mental health services for the counties of Norfolk and Suffolk, serving a population of 1.6 million people. We are a large organisation covering a wide geographical area divided into ‘Care Groups'. There are also Care Groups supporting children, family and young people’s services, and specialist services, including Forensic mental health services.

Each Care Group has its own Leadership team, with the aim of supporting clinically led decision making locally, to support the needs of people accessing services.

We have inpatient facilities across both counties with smaller bases in rural locations. Many of the Trust’s services are offered in the community, enabling people accessing services to receive the support they need in an environment familiar to them.

At NSFT we believe in recovery and wellbeing, and understand the importance of good physical health, maintaining relationships and achieving a balance between treatments and continuing an active life.

The people in our care, families and carers are at the centre of all aspects of all we do and are vital in helping shape and support our service strategy. Our strategy supports and enables people with mental health problems to live a fulfilling life and make their personal recovery journey.
