We are seeking a confident and enthusiastic band 5 occupational therapist to join our occupational therapy team at the Newham Centre for Mental Health based in Plaistow, East London. This is an exciting opportunity which will offer you the chance to develop your skills in an in-patient setting, working within acute adult mental health services.

You will work alongside a band 5 and a band 6 in-patient OT and an in-patient lead OT, OT technicians, a sports therapy lead, and the ward MDTs delivering a service for people admitted to a single gender ward. Your role will involve developing the occupational therapy service within the ward and the provision of OT assessments and interventions in collaboration with the wider MDT. There will be an opportunity to develop close links with OTs and MDTs working within our community teams including our community recovery teams, early intervention services, crisis services and primary care networks to support successful discharge from hospital.

The OT team facilitate a number of in-patient groups as part of a unit-wide group programme involving psychological therapies, ward MDTs, and life skills recovery workers. We would be interested in any additional skills or innovative ideas that candidates can bring to further expand this aspect of the service.

Main duties of the job

To provide an occupational therapy (OT) service to patients admitted to the acute treatment wards at Newham Centre for Mental Health (NCMH). To work in collaboration with other members of the occupational therapy and multidisciplinary teams as well as careers involved in patients' care. To support patients' seamless transition from hospital to their communities, focusing on their health promoting social integration goals.

Person Specification Education/ Qualification/ Training Essential
  • oDiploma or degree in Occupational Therapy
  • oCurrent registration with the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC)
Desirable
  • oMember of the Royal College of Occupational Therapy
  • oExperience of CPD and role development activities
Experience Essential
  • oExperience in a related clinical field
  • oEvidence of Service Development activities
  • oExperience of working as part of a Multi-disciplinary team

Knowledge and Skills Essential
  • oGood interpersonal skills that enable therapeutic alliances to be developed with patients.
  • oAbility to communicate with OT staff and other professionals
  • oAwareness of potential hazards including frequent verbal aggression and risk of physical aggression in settings such as the patients home, community venues, public transport etc.) whilst ensuring safety of self, patient and members of the public.
  • oAbility to liaise with other services, statutory and non-statutory around clinical issues.
