Do you want to experience what it’s like working in a Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit? Are you a nurse looking for a new opportunity or challenge? Are you a newly qualified nurse seeking your first nursing role within the NHS?

The Male Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit based within St Ann’s Hospital has an exciting opportunity for a Staff Nurse to join our brilliant team.

Haven Male PICU is a 7 bedded male PICU that provides a high level of effective and compassionate care to men who are experiencing the most acute phase of a serious mental disorder. We aim to promote a calm and therapeutic approach in a low stimulus environment where our patients are supported by a friendly, skilled and enthusiastic team that enables them to move forwards with their recovery.

The team aim to:
  • Deliver care and treatment to patients who are detained under the Mental Health Act using positive engagement, talking therapies (CBT/DBT) and medicines
  • Ensuring patient and their family/carers are at the centre of their recovery journey
  • Engage creatively with patients to co-produce their individual care plans
  • Prioritise both mental and physical health wellness
  • Engaging patients in doing a variety of activities both on the ward and off the ward
  • Help patients get active, eat well and take care of their own wellbeing
  • Promote freedom of choice and least restrictive practice, in a safe and therapeutic environment

We are looking for suitably qualified and caring individuals who wish to work in a fast paced and challenging environment. You will have excellent clinical skills and be a team player who is emotionally intelligent and able to remain calm when managing potentially testing situations. We would love to hear about what attributes you believe you will bring to the team within your application, and what has driven you to apply for this role within PICU.

We would welcome applications from newly qualified nurses and we provide a very comprehensive and fully supported Preceptorship Programme for newly qualified healthcare professionals, alongside a thorough ward based induction programme where you will be closely supported by the Clinical Team Leaders and wider team in settling in to your new role as a qualified nurse.

In return for joining us on Haven you will become a valued member of our multi-disciplinary team and have a say in how our service develops. We are friendly, enthusiastic, supportive and work to promote a safe and effective environment, enabling patients to overcome their current difficulties.

As a specialist service, we are able to provide opportunities to further develop your skills within specialised training such as DBT, CBT, enhanced risk assessment, and enhanced physical health interventions. Following successful completion of your 3 month probation period, you will meet with your supervisor to discuss your personal development plan which will identify your learning and training needs, so we can ensure you have all the skills you need to be the best you can be in your role.

This is an exciting opportunity for nurses who would like to utilise their skills in a specialist environment, caring for people with a wide variety of presenting problems and needs. We guarantee that no two days will be the same and that you will be helping to make a real difference to our patient’s lives.

If this sounds like something you would be interested in then please apply!

In return:
  • We will support and facilitate your development in this role through regular supervision and a development plan tailored to your needs and experience
  • You will receive a comprehensive and structured PICU induction programme and training
  • Monthly pay plus enhancements for night, weekend and bank holiday working
  • NHS pension scheme
  • Holiday pay for up to 33 days (dependent on NHS service), plus bank holidays
  • NHS discount and salary sacrifice scheme
  • Not forgetting our unique selling point – our Trust beach huts located along the famous Sandbanks coastline.

You will be required to undertake a Prevention and Management of Violence and Aggression course and it is a condition of your employment that you successfully complete all aspects of this course; if this is not achieved you will not be able to commence working in the post.

Employment in this post requires an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, which the Trust will cover the cost of. Applicants who subscribe to the DBS update service are able to present a valid DBS certificate instead of requiring a new check.

This is a full time post (37.5 hrs per week) however, please discuss the option for part time hours within your interview if this is something you are interested in.
