The varied range of AHPs in the Rehabilitation and Specialist Directorate are an essential ingredient of our multidisciplinary teams and there is a real commitment and drive to ensure AHP services are coordinated, and enhance the range of professions and support services to deliver high quality services.

Working alongside the Directorate and AHP Leadership Teams, you will be responsible for championing and leading AHP's within the Directorate, ensuring AHP skills are utilized effectively, that AHP's are able to evaluate, improve and contribute to the development and improvement of services within the directorate.

You will need to be HCPC registered, with relevant experience, and committed to quality improvement and have the drive and energy to bring about positive change.

Main duties of the job

  • To clinically and professionally lead AHPs working in the Rehabilitation and Specialist Directorate, including input to recruitment, supervision, and the continuing professional development (education and training) of these staff within the multidisciplinary context.
  • To be a core member of the Rehabilitation and Specialist Directorate management and leadership team and provide specialist clinical advice.
  • To have oversight of the planning and delivery of high quality, proactive, responsive and evidence based AHP services within the Rehabilitation and Specialist Directorate, in line with the SHSC Clinical and Social Care Strategy.
  • To provide specialist AHP advice to planning, development and evaluation of services within the Rehabilitation and Specialist Directorate holding responsibility for defined projects as required.
  • To provide supervision of AHP (profession specific) students on practice placement.
  • To deputise for the Deputy Lead AHP when necessary.
  • To maintain professional registration as an AHP with HCPC.

Job description Job responsibilities

Professional Leadership Supervision and Appraisal
  • Provide professional leadership to AHP staff within the Rehabilitation and Specialist Directorate including input to recruitment, supervision, and development of these staff within the multidisciplinary context.
  • Provide professional advice for AHP staff across the Directorate including recruitment, appraisals, job planning, setting objectives and disciplinary matters.
  • To supervise and manage uni-professional Professional/Clinical Leads clinically and professionally.
  • To demonstrate leadership skills through the management of designated projects.
  • To act as a member of the senior AHP leadership team.
  • To prepare and present AHP reports to the Directorate Information Performance Quality Review (IPQR) meeting.

Clinical
  • To act as a source of clinical expertise (and be responsible for providing complex, personalised and recovery focused assessments and care planning).
  • To apply expert professional knowledge acquired through highly advanced courses and/or specialised training, continual professional development, and clinical experience (gained over many years).
  • Provide expertise and professional advice, guidance, and consultation to AHP staff and other professionals contributing directly to service user care and treatment.
  • To commit to evidence-based practice and use research opportunities to support the efficacy of therapeutic interventions.
  • Develop and maintain own expertise and agreed level of expertise of team members/AHP staff by updating own specialist clinical knowledge and skills.
  • To work in partnership with the Trust wide Peer Support Lead and advise operational teams and services if the support and supervision required by Peer Support Workers

Communication
  • To establish and maintain robust communication networks with staff at all levels across the Rehabilitation and Specialist Directorate, the AHP senior leaders and the wider Trust as required. Liaise at all levels within the organisation and with relevant external organisations.
  • To develop and maintain good communication with service users, their carers and Multi-Disciplinary Teams.
  • To develop and maintain effective professional communication structures.
  • Develop effective working relationships with senior clinical and managerial staff across teams and services, and proactively advance, develop and implement trust policies and Strategy.
  • To promote awareness of the role of AHPs within services, locally and nationally negotiating priorities where appropriate.
  • Provide and receive complex and contentious information.
  • To demonstrate presentation skills in a variety of settings as appropriate.
  • Communicate effectively and accurately in written media to convey information in a comprehensible and unambiguous way.
  • Use diplomatic, persuasive and negotiation skills to resolve conflict situations.

Professional Development and Ethics
  • To apply specialist skills and knowledge to establish professional competence and fitness to practice as a Clinical Lead AHP.
  • To demonstrate a high level of ongoing personal development through participation in internal and external development opportunities, recording learning outcomes in a portfolio.
  • In line with local guidelines, review and reflect on own practice and performance through effective use of professional and operational supervision and appraisal.
  • To adhere to relevant Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct and monitor compliance of AHP staff with local and national standards of practice.

Workforce and Training
  • To identify and coordinate the education, training and CPD needs of AHP staff and participate in the development and delivery of training within the Directorate.
  • Ensure training records are accurately completed.
  • In partnership with managers and professional leads support development of the AHP workforce in the directorate; provide advice on professional aspects of AHP resource management and skill mix in the context of development of multidisciplinary approaches to care.
  • To lead on the coordination and allocation of AHP student placements within the Directorate.
  • To contribute to the induction and training of students and other staff both within and external to the Trust.
  • To be responsible for the supervision and written assessment of AHP (profession specific) students on practice placement within the Trust.
  • To provide specialist advice and training to service users, carers, and other professionals.

Research and Practice Development
  • To coordinate and support research activity.
  • To actively engage in practice development, evaluation, audit and research activities relevant to AHP and/or service areas, disseminating findings at local level to promote evidence-based practice.
  • To promote user and carer involvement in line with the Trust strategy.

Clinical Governance, Quality, Standards
  • To contribute to development of clinical and service governance and the quality agenda within the Trust, including the setting and monitoring of practice standards.
  • To apply and advise on national guidelines/legislation relating to health and social care in AHP service provision.
  • To demonstrate a sound understanding of clinical governance and risk management and apply to work situation.

Management
  • To be responsible for the recruitment and line management of designated staff.
  • To deputise for other AHP leads as required.
  • To decide priorities for a designated team of staff balancing other service user related and professional demands and ensuring that these remain in accordance with those of the service area.
  • To ensure that staff adhere to Health and Safety guidelines and maintain safe working environments and working practices
  • To be responsible for the collation of appropriate data and statistics as required by the Trust.

Service Development
  • To be responsible for the leadership and have oversight of the planning and delivery of high quality, proactive and responsive AHP services within the Directorate in line with the Trusts Clinical and Social Care Strategy.
  • To provide specialist advice to planning, development and evaluation of services within the Rehabilitation and Specialist Directorate, holding responsibility for defined projects as required.
  • To contribute to the development of the strategic direction of Allied Health Professions within the trust and beyond.


Person Specification training and qualifications Essential
  • oDiploma/degree in an AHP
Experience Essential
  • oSignificant post registration experience (minimum of 4 years post qualification) including roles involving leadership and management responsibilities
  • oSupervision of staff and students.
Knowlwdge and Skills Essential
  • oSpecialist knowledge and application of current best practice in AHP relevant to mental health and other services provided by SHSC
  • oAbility to work autonomously and organise and respond effectively to complex information under pressure, and set priorities
