The post holder will deliver specialist speech and language therapy intervention as a member of a specialist stroke and neurological services team, providing care to patients who have had a recent stroke or are diagnosed with a neurological condition as part of the specialist in-patient service and Early Supported Discharge Team. The caseload will include community in-patient, domiciliary and clinic based activity, with a focus on stroke rehabilitation.

We have strong links with the stroke association and meet regularly with our local co-ordinator. The post holder will also benefit from regular meetings and CPD with the community Speech and Language Therapy Service.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will deliver specialist stroke and neurological speech and language therapy services as a member of the Stroke Early Supported Discharge Team, providing care to patients who have had a recent stroke or are diagnosed with a neurological condition as part of the specialist in-patient service and Early Supported Discharge Team (community). The caseload will include in-patient, domiciliary and clinic-based activity, with a focus on stroke rehabilitation.

The post holder will be based at St Margaret's Hospital, Epping but will be required to provide services across West Essex.

The post holder will assist in developing speech and language therapy services including patient, carer and staff supervision, education and training programmes and be responsible for coordination of student placements.

The postholder will independently manage the caseload of adults with acquired communication and swallowing disorders, actively initiating and participating in the interdisciplinary decision making around patient care and developing service delivery initiatives.

The post holder will also provide clinical support to more junior colleagues working in the team.

Job description Job responsibilities

  • To be responsible for the clinical work of the speech and language therapists providing services to individuals with an acquired neurological condition; monitoring referrals, prioritising the caseload in accordance with service guidelines and undertaking general arrangements for providing a responsive, cohesive and effective service for patients across West Essex.
  • To provide a highly specialist speech and language therapy service to a caseload of adults with a range of communication and swallowing disorders primarily as a result of acquired neurological conditions
  • Maintenance of highly specialist level of competence within the clinical field
  • Supervising more junior members of the team, inclusive of SLT and Therapy Assistants.


  • Person Specification Experience Essential
    • Experience working with stroke and neurological patients as a qualified SLT
    • Member of the RCSLT
