We are seeking an energetic, innovative, and skilled Psychologist with a passion for community psychology approaches to join the trusts new Camden Core Team, specialising in working with young adults (18-25), providing assessment, treatment and consultation to other agencies around young adults' mental health. The post holder will also have 0.3 WTE with Project 10/10, an innovative community project aimed at supporting young people who have been affected by serious youth violence in Camden & Islington.The model takes mental health professionals into the spaces frequented by the young people they seek to support.

Main duties of the job

Specialising in Young Adults (18-25) The post holder will play a vital role in bridging the work that Project 10/10 does with the model being developed by Camden & Islington NHS Core Teams under the newly emerging Young People Services Pathway, helping to strengthen and develop this partnership in meeting the needs of this complex and vulnerable group of young people. As a psychologist embedded in both teams you will be uniquely positioned to influence the culture of how we work in a new and collaborative ways, co-creating this approach with the young people, which is a core principle for how we work. The post holder will be based in the Core Team 0.7 WTE each week and in Project 10/10 0.3 WTE each week.

Job description Job responsibilities

The post-holder will be part of a team (Kentish Town Core Team - Central & South) providing extended assessments, formulations and brief interventions (individual and group) to Young Adults (aged 18-25) presenting with severe mental health problems in the London Borough of Camden. Part of the postholders Kentish Town South caseload will include people aged 25 and above as they will be a member of this MDT. This role will support and offer liaison, education, supervision and consultation to GPs, members of the multi-disciplinary team and the wider primary care network. The aim of the service is to increase the number of people whose mental health support is appropriately managed in line with the community framework for mental health using a population health approach. The post-holder will act as a fully integrated member of the team providing a specialist psychological perspective to support the transformation and development of the service.

The post holder will also work embedded in Project 10/10 working with multi-disciplinary/multi agency colleagues to support the mental health needs of young people (aged 18-25) affected by the prevalence of violence and crime in society today.

The post holder will provide highly specialist psychological assessments and treatment using evidence based, NICE recommended interventions and will work autonomously within professional guidelines and within the overall framework of the services policies and procedures. The post holder will also seek to develop new and innovative ways of engaging with and supporting young people who ordinarily might feel unable to engage with services offered by mainstream mental health services.


  • 2.1 Clinical and Managerial
    • Provide a comprehensive psychology service as an integrated part of the Core Team/Project 10/10

    • Provide specialist psychological assessments, formulations, consultations and interventions to young people aged 18-25 y/o as a member of the Kentish Town Core Team (Central & South).

    • Manage a caseload that also includes some people above the age of 25y/o, as a member of the Kentish Town South Core Team MDT.

    • Assist GPs with diagnosis, management plans, risk assessments, crisis plans and self-help plans for service users with complex common mental health problems and stable severe mental health presentations who are being managed exclusively in primary care

    • Work with Core Team/Project 10/10 colleagues to develop a collaborative care model for service users with physical and emotional difficulties, including those with Medically Unexplained Symptoms (MUS) and Long-Term Conditions (LTC)

    • Provide advice and support to network teams on the management of service users who have been stepped down from secondary care / intensive community mental health services

    • Support GPs and practice staff in their management and treatment of service users through case discussions, joint consultations and bespoke training.

    • Play a key role in implementing improved linkage between Core, Intensive and Young Peoples Services.

    • Work within the service to triage potential and new referrals sent to the team, providing consultation, information and advice to service users and partners as well as allocation of new work in the service to appropriate MDT colleagues. This includes signposting new referrals to and liaising as appropriate with other primary care services, IAPT, voluntary sector and secondary mental health services.

    • Maintain effective communication with GP, primary care staff, service users and their carers;

    • Provide clinical input, where necessary, to multi-disciplinary case conferencing around complex presentations being managed solely in primary care within the team and as part of the wider integrated health and care networks.

    • Engage with local service user participation models.

    • Provide clinical and professional leadership and to participate in management activities and governance processes related to the post or the wider service in which it is embedded.

    • Play an integral role in the performance of the team, the further development of the service, and the development of clinical pathways and priorities of the service line

    • Work within the MDT promoting respect for all professional groups and focusing upon coherent and integrated teamwork.

    • Provide reports and communicate in a skilled and sensitive manner concerning the assessment, formulation and treatment offered and undertaken with service users.

    • Manage and supervise assistant psychologists, clinical associates, apprentices and other staff as appropriate, including more junior clinical / counselling psychologists

    • Other management/clinical supporting activity (to be negotiated as required by the Trust.)

    • Provide professional and clinical supervision of other members of the multi-disciplinary team, of trainee clinical and counselling psychologists, and, where required, of assistant psychologists and clinical associate psychologists, on psychological interventions.

    • To provide advice, consultation, training and supervision, where appropriate, to other health and social care staff working with service users

    • Utilise evidence-based literature and research to support evidence-based practice in individual, family and group work and work with other team members.

    • Undertake appropriate research and provide research support to other staff undertaking research.

    • Participate in and contribute to clinical audit and service evaluation with colleagues within the service, to help evaluate and improve service provision, proposing changes to working practice and procedures for own work area as required.

    Person Specification QUALIFICATIONS / REGISTRATIONS Essential
    • o level training in clinical or counselling psychology oPost-graduate doctoral level qualification in clinical or counselling psychology as accredited by the British Psychological Society, or British Psychological Society Statement of Equivalence. oCurrent registration with the Health and Care Professions Council as a clinical psychologist or a counselling psychologist oCompletion of further post-qualification specialist training in an area relevant to the post
    • oSkills in the use of a range of methods of psychological assessment (including psychometric tests), intervention and management for the full range of problems of severity and complexity presented in adult mental health oAbility to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with service users, their families, carers and other professional colleagues both within and outside the NHS oSkills in providing consultation to other professional and non-professional groups. oAbility to form good working relationships with others in a multidisciplinary setting oAbility to teach and train others, using a variety of multi-media materials suitable for presentations within public, professional and academic settings oAbility to identify and employ mechanisms of clinical governance as appropriate, to support and maintain clinical practice oInterest and ability to contribute to service development
