Join our team of 12 Liaison Psychiatrists in Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust

A vacancy has arisen for a Consultant Liaison Psychiatrist for working age Adults in Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth.

We are looking for a Consultant Liaison Psychiatrist to join our Liaison Psychiatry Team in Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust (SHFT) based at Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust’s Queen Alexandra Hospital (QAH). The Mental Health Liaison Team at QAH has developed significantly over the last 5 years and now provides a 24-hour mental health liaison service to the acute hospital Emergency Department and inpatient wards. The team comprises three old age liaison psychiatrists, one other adult liaison psychiatrist, two clinical psychologists, 24 mental health practitioners and 2 administrators. We are looking to expand the staffing numbers further in coming months and years and are continuing to work with the commissioners in a phased development towards a core-24 liaison service.

The successful candidate will be responsible for providing clinical leadership and consultant input into the Adult Liaison Psychiatry team covering the Emergency Department, Acute Medical Unit and wards. The team cover adults of working age 18-65 and those over 65 still open to an adult mental health team.

Mental health liaison services have developed enormously in Southern Health over the last 5 years, with 24 hour services in all the acute trusts we serve (Portsmouth, Southampton, Winchester and Basingstoke). The post has huge potential to develop local services and make academic links with both Southampton University and to benefit from the relatively recent closer link established between Portsmouth University and Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust.

Portsmouth Hospital University NHS Trust is a large and busy university hospital serving a local community, covering patients in Portsmouth and Southeast Hampshire, with an excess of 142,000 patients within the Emergency pathways and with some regional services such as renal medicine. The hospital is one of the largest acute hospitals closely working with the Ministry of Defence, with over 1000 beds in total.

The aim in addition is for the service to achieve PLAN (Royal College of Psychiatrists Psychiatric Liaison Accreditation Network) accreditation within 1 year; it is currently PLAN registered. This enables access to PLAN forums and training.

The post holder will be part of a combined Portsmouth and South East on-call rota for adults, approximately 1 in 15
