Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to make a full-time appointment for a consultant psychiatrist to work with and support the new pathways developing across the Integrated Care System of Greater Manchester (GM), for people with complex and persistent symptoms following COVID infection. The post holder will become part of the consultant psychiatry body at Oldham and Pennine Care Psychological Medicine post COVID service.

You will be welcomed and supported in developing your skills and contributions to the borough, the wider organisations and Integrated Care System of Greater Manchester.

Main duties of the job

The appointee will be working with the 2 post COVID multi-disciplinary mental health teams across GM. These are being delivered by GM Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust (GMMH) and Pennine Care NHS FT. The appointee will work with these teams and into the 'Tier 4' Salford multidisciplinary team, supporting the wider system to provide an accessible bio-psychosocial approach for people with these symptoms and supporting research and service evaluation in this area.

The Greater Manchester approach for post COVID care has 4 Tiers. Tier 1 and 2 are in Primary Care (represented by care through Primary Care Networks and supported by Improving Access to Psychological Therapy Teams). Tiers 3 and 4 are in specialist rehabilitation teams and acute healthcare trust providers supported by this specialist mental health provision. This post holder will work primarily with Tier 3 and 4 developments.

This is a substantive appointment.

The out of hours on call frequency is low (1 in 30) with full second tier cover and 1 day off afterwards.

About us

The post holder will join the recently developed post COVID services in Greater Manchester. Pennine Care is hosting this post, which will work with Greater Manchester Mental Health Post COVID Service, Pennine Care Psychological Medicine post COVID Service and Tier 4 post COVID services at Salford Royal Infirmary. These teams include an array of practitioners from both physical and mental health backgrounds, and primary and secondary care.

There are a number of ongoing research projects within these service and academic links are encouraged.

Main Responsibilities

These include clinical, liaison, educational, managerial and service evaluation roles. Clinical work will include assessment and interventions with people with persistent physical symptoms, psychological problems and neurocognitive difficulties following COVID infection and involve working with an expanding multidisciplinary team. The team will promote the development of skills in this area within Acute Trusts, Community Services, Primary Care networks and across the wider ICS.

Key Requirements of the Person Specification:

The post holder needs excellent knowledge and experience of assessing and providing psychological/ mental health interventions for people with physical health problems. The post is suitable for those with a CCT in adult psychiatry or a dual CCT in adult and old age psychiatry and experience of working with people with physical health and or neurocognitive difficulties. An endorsement in liaison psychiatry and/ or experience in neuropsychiatry is desirable but not essential. Applications are welcome from people who want to work part time.

Applicants must be on the GMCs Specialist Register or eligible for inclusion or be within six months of the anticipated award of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in General Adult Psychiatry, or a dual CCT a/a, at the time of interview for the post.

You will have relevant professional qualifications in line with Essential elements of the Person Specification, and a CV demonstrating a wide range of Essential and Desirable skills in terms of qualifications, clinical skills, knowledge and experience as well as academic skills and lifelong learning all detailed in the attached job description.

  • Fully registered with the GMC with a license to practice at the time of appointment.
  • Eligible for inclusion in the Specialist Register or within 6 months of gaining CCT
  • Approved Clinician status OR able to achieve within 3 months of appointment
  • Approved under S12 OR able to achieve with 3 months of appointment

  • In good standing with GMC with respect to warning and conditions on practice
Skills knowledge and experience Essential
  • Excellent knowledge in liaision psychiatry and/ or neuropsychiatry including knowledge and evidence of experience of persistent physical symptoms with unclear pathology, and long term conditions with complex psychological problems
  • Evidence of experience and knowledge of a range of psychological interventions for this patient group
  • Excellent clinical skills using bio-psycho-social perspective and wide medical knowledge
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
