Specialist Occupational Therapist – Band 6

North East Hants Older People Community Mental Health Services

Full Time 37.5 hrs per week

An excellent opportunity has arisen to come and be part of our dynamic and awarding winning Occupational Therapy service. As a service we have developed innovative ways of delivering evidenced based and outcome measured occupational therapy in the Older People Service to support people in their individual recovery journey, including a variety of occupationally focused group programmes. The post will include delivering both individual and group occupational therapy interventions within a clear care pathway, these interventions include:
  • Lifestyle Matters Programme – a 20 session group which utilises Lifestyle Redesign© principles and is referred to in the NICE guidelines (2009) where it is identified as the Occupational Therapy Intervention of choice for Older Adults. The programme has run within the Trust since 2012 for Older People Services and has had a positive impact on the lives of people who access our services.
  • Memory Matters Programme – a 6 session group for people with early stages of dementia and their carers. The group provides an educational element based around promoting a healthy lifestyle for the brain (exercise, diet, mental stimulation, sleep, stress management, an active social life).
  • Individual occupational therapy.
  • Comprehensive occupational therapy assessments.

We use Model of Human Occupation to guide all our occupational therapy assessments and interventions. We are particularly focusing on embedding occupational science and neuroscience into our practice. The Occupational Therapy Leadership team is committed to an extensive, co-ordinated CPD programme including Trust wide training, core competence training, annual conferences, robust supervision structure, specialist interest groups and Older People’s care groups. Staff are valued for their expertise in occupationally focussed interventions and specialist group therapy.

Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (SABP) is one of the largest Mental Health Trusts in the South East working collaboratively with, health, social care and voluntary organisations. We also work in partnership with university colleagues to develop research projects and funding streams. SABP’s innovative approach to mental health care has been recognised nationally (HSJ).

This post is suitable if you have had previous experience of working in mental health with older people with mental health or cognitive impairment, you want to consolidate your knowledge of occupational therapy and want to be involved in delivering high quality, evidence-based outcome measured occupational therapy interventions. The post would further provide you with the opportunity to work alongside the Lead Occupational Therapist.
