Job Details

The Suffolk early help teams providing prevention and early intervention support to young people struggling with their mental health in primary care settings. They are appointing a number of Band 7 children & young people (CFYP) Primary Care Network (PCN) practitioners (Clinical Psychologists, Social Workers, OTs & mental health nurses). In this role you will be working across a small number of GP practices in West Suffolk to support the mental health of young people. This is an amazing opportunity to join a new initiative which is part of the transformation of the primary care offer for young people's mental health. We need people with experience with young people's mental health; with excellent leadership, systems and communication skills who are passionate about bringing mental health support closer to families, young people and non-mental health professionals.

This post is based in West Suffolk. We will be recruiting to the same posts for East Suffolk so please look for the East Suffolk advert.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a strong and supportive team and work with the wider system, to develop this valuable provision.

Primary Care Networks (PCNs) are groups of GP practices which work together in a local geographical area. In Suffolk there are 14 PCNs with a variety of different sizes, patient populations and mental health priorities.

Main duties of the job

On a day to day basis, PCN Practitioners will work as a member of GP practice extended teams, be based in practices (where possible subject to Covid) and also be part of under-18 wellbeing team for the West locality, made up of Clinical Psychologists, psychological therapists, PMHWs, mental health nurses, amongst other professions.

You will be part of a multidisciplinary team providing advice, support, and treatment for young people under 18 experiencing problems with their mental health and wellbeing. You will collaboratively engage with the GP practices within the PCN and the PCN Practitioners to agree priorities for each local population. You will work closely with secondary care (CAMHS) and the early intervention teams. You will be passionate about supporting the development of mental health understanding in others, including the wider system.

We are looking to recruit Mental Health Nurses, Registered Nurses, Occupational Therapists, Social Workers and Clinical Psychologists with an interest and experience in a mental health setting having worked with under 18's, to undertake the planning and delivery of direct patient care in West Suffolk. The equivalent East Suffolk post is advertised separately.

  • career progression
  • starting annual leave of 27 days per annum increasing to 33 days pa based on length of service (plus paid bank holidays)
  • staff physio service
  • NHS discounts and many more
  • You will be supported to develop your professional knowledge and skills through a network of psychological therapists and support services, such as the NSFT research department and links with the University of East Anglia.
  • You will be supported to develop your leadership skills through opportunities with the NHS Leadership Academy
  • We will provide AMBIT training shortly after joining us

Here at NSFT we pride ourselves on being a welcoming, talented, friendly and supportive team who like nothing better than sharing their experiences and learning from each other.

Job description
Job responsibilities

You will have knowledge, skills and experience of working across the age range, with young people and their families and across the range of complexity. We are looking for individuals who bring personal enthusiasm, creativity and energy to work in this vital newly developing area.

You will need to have good organizational skills and experience of leading a team, as you will manage a team of practitioners providing services to people with mental health care needs as well as offering support and advice to other health care professionals. You will be an autonomous practitioner, making clinical judgements, identifying alternative courses of action, managing and providing a high-quality care.

The U18 Wellbeing team, Psychology and Schools Team, EWH, Suffolk Family Focus and Mental Health Support teams are joining forces through strong leadership to evoke change in the systems around children and young people, to connect, empower, and encourage individuals and communities to be champions of their own mental health. Local CFYP services are evolving, utilising the THIRVE model as the essence of a transformation which offers an exciting and original approach to mental health support. By joining our service you will be supporting this transformation, enabling us to promote and provide early intervention in the primary care arena and strengthen confidence of systems surrounding young people to respond to their need. This role will contribute to the wider system thinking about the development of services at the interface of education, health and social care. Making it a unique and exciting opportunity to be part of transforming local services for young people and their families.

Not only will you work with the current Under 18 Wellbeing Service, but you will also work closely with the Psychology in Schools Team, Mental Health Support Teams, Emotional Wellbeing Hub practitioners and Suffolk Family Focus. These teams include members from a range of professions (including Clinical Psychology, psychological therapists, PMHWs, mental health nurses, CWPs, EMHPs, systemic practitioners, assistant psychologists) and backgrounds (including Adult and CYP services) and draw on a range of therapeutic models in their work, including, Trauma informed practice, Systemic, Attachment and Mentalisation-based approaches CBT, ACT, CAT, CFT. It is an ambition that all of these team members will be AMBIT trained in the coming year. You will receive clinical supervision from an 8b Principal Clinical Psychologist, who will work closely to provide the leadership for the new PCN roles.

We would encourage any applicants who are interested to organise a meeting with Angela Rooke (Service Manager) or Dr Beth Mosley MBE (Consultant Clinical Psychologist)

Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust is the main provider of specialist mental health services for the counties of Norfolk and Suffolk, serving a population of 1.6 million people. We are a large organisation covering a wide geographical area divided into ‘Care Groups'. There are also Care Groups supporting children, family and young people’s services, and specialist services, including Forensic mental health services.

Each Care Group has its own Leadership team, with the aim of supporting clinically led decision making locally, to support the needs of people accessing services.

We have inpatient facilities across both counties with smaller bases in rural locations. Many of the Trust’s services are offered in the community, enabling people accessing services to receive the support they need in an environment familiar to them.

At NSFT we believe in recovery and wellbeing, and understand the importance of good physical health, maintaining relationships and achieving a balance between treatments and continuing an active life.

The people in our care, families and carers are at the centre of all aspects of all we do and are vital in helping shape and support our service strategy. Our strategy supports and enables people with mental health problems to live a fulfilling life and make their personal recovery journey.
