An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Ward Manager position within our secure forensic service. The secure service provides specialist assessment, treatment and where appropriate intensive rehabilitation services for offenders with a learning disability. The majority of service users have mild to moderate learning disability with complex needs and additional mental health problems who display the extremes of challenging behavior.

Malvern is a 13 bedded low secure unit for men with a learning disability who have offended.

To apply for the above position you will need to be highly motivated with strong organisational and communication skills in order to lead and further develop the service and staff team, whilst at the same time dealing with the demands of extremely complex client groups. You will be expected to work collaboratively as part of the M.D.T and show a commitment to patient involvement and service development.

Main duties of the job

The post holder is responsible for ensuring that service users have comprehensive treatment packages from admission through to discharge are facilitated.

The post holder will actively support / develop user involvement in all aspects of their care / treatment.

The post holder is responsible for the day to day management of the unit including the management of the physical, procedural and relational security standards required for a low secure unit.

The post holder is responsible for the management of the direct care team within the unit comprising of Qualified Nurses (Staff Nurses and Deputy Managers), Assistant Practitioners, Health Care Assistants and Support staff.

The post holder is responsible for the continued development of the unit in line with evidenced based practice and current research.

Motivate and encourage nursing staff and other professional colleagues in reviewing their practice to support innovation and change and optimise clinical effectiveness.

Recognise own limits seeking appropriate specialist support and supervision.

Promote a positive and open culture both within the clinical areas and across the service

Maintain the physical, procedural and relational security of patients, colleagues and self in line with current policy and practice

In order to apply for this position you will need:
  • R.N.L.D or R.N.M.H Qualification
  • Extensive experience in a management position
  • Significant current experience within secure services


Person Specification Qualifications Essential
  • Learning Disability or mental Health Nurse registered with the NMC
  • Management qualification or willing to work towards
Experience Essential
  • Significant Experience working in a forensic setting
  • Experience of managing an inpatient team
Knowledge Essential
  • Knowledge of Positive Behaviour Support (PBS)
  • Knowledge of national drivers in Learning Disability Care
  • Knowledge of Physical, Procedural and Relational Security
Personal Attribute Essential
  • Ability to lead and motivate a team.
