Join us as we launch our Somerset wide ADHD service for Children and young people to 18 years. Our new pathway is connecting and enhancing existing pockets of ADHD care, joining with the existing Children and Young Persons Neurodevelopmental Partnership ASC assessment team.

We are looking for someone with enthusiasm, organisation, and excellent communication to compliment a number of different professions. You will have several key roles including clinic letter typing, communication prioritisation , and triage organisation. You will be able to work to deadlines and help develop systems in this new and evolving team.

Main duties of the job

As a Mental Health Nurse you will have a background in CAMHS and confidence to support and assess children and young people with a range of emotional and mental health issues related to ADHD. You will provide therapeutic support, safety netting and assessment in a range of settings, and be a non-medical prescriber or willing to work towards this. You will work closely with other professions including a psychiatrist and have access to our local CAMHS team for Continued Professional Development.

The CYPNP is a multi-professional service with staff from a range of backgrounds such as Paediatrics, and mental health. You will use your mental and emotional health qualifications and experience to focus on those patients with ADHD most in need of them. With other professionals such as other nurses, psychiatrist, psychologist, and OT you will plan and deliver appropriate mental / emotional health and behavioural assessments, education and intervention for a caseload of patients with ADHD. You will have regular liaison, support and CPD opportunities from our local CAMHS service. You will have clinical supervision and support from our CYPNP based Psychiatrist.

Job description Job responsibilities

The post holder is required to be part of a developing specialist ADHD service in line with Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder: diagnosis and management: NICE guideline [NG87] 2018) and associated best practice. They will support providing an Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) service for children, young people, their families and carers primarily within Somerset as part of a wider CYPNP (Children and Young Persons Neurodevelopmental Partnership) multidisciplinary team.

The individual will use specialist knowledge and expertise in making decisions regarding the most effective and appropriate care of children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and associated conditions - both autonomously and in collaboration with medical staff and other professionals. They will provide effective clinical care and leadership on a daily basis for this defined case load of children.

The individual will work within the system of a multidisciplinary approach to patient centred care delivery, which builds on the philosophy of greater involvement of patients and their relatives / carers by using the Trust Patient and public involvement strategy. The individual will liaise with other professionals to ensure that planned care is coordinated, effective and efficient. Promote the wider national aims of public health education.

They will also contribute towards developing standards of excellence in Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder across the local areas ensuring full use of all available resources. The role will include on-going assessment and audit of relevant services.

Person Specification QUALIFICATIONS & TRAINING Essential
  • oNursing Qualification at degree level (RGN, RMN or Paedia and full registration with the relevant professional body (NMC)
  • oTeaching/mentorship qualification
  • oNon-medical prescriber or willingness to become one
Desirable
  • oCommunity qualifications
  • oExperience of complex needs children and ADHD
  • oExperience of emotional / mental health service support
Experience Essential
  • o3 years at Band 6 (or equivalent)
  • oExperience of working in areas relevant to the post with respect to the role of nurse specialist
  • oExperience of working in the community and care of children with behavioural issues
Desirable
  • oCurrently working in a community / ADHD/ emotional / mental health service setting.
  • oClose working with multi professionals within and outside the NHS
  • oCare of children with complex needs and understanding of SEND principles
KNOWLEDGE Essential
  • oUp to date understanding of health issues in relation to children.
  • oUnderstanding of needs of children with special/additional needs and their families
Desirable
  • oGovernment publications in relation to community work.
