The Physical Health team is expanding!

An exciting opportunity has arisen, do you want to help improve physical health care for inpatient service users at SWLSTG as well as lead on Parity of Esteem? If yes, then we want to hear from you!

We have a full time Band 8a role working in our growing physical health team in improving not only the physical health of admitted service users but also training and developing staff in their physical health interventions. This role works closely with other members of the physical skills and Nursing Education and Clinical Skills team as well as across all the service lines at the trust. This role works in close partnership with our neighbouring acute Trust St George's University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust leading on our Parity of Esteem programme. The post holder will be expected to travel across our three inpatient sites (and St George's) and offer expert advice on physical health interventions for our service users.

Main duties of the job

  • You will be able to lead on physical health improvement for our service users, work closely with our neighbouring acute trusts as part of the integrated care system and lead on Resuscitation services and the subject matter expert in back care facilitation.


  • You should have excellent communication skills, be able to work across a range of settings within mental and physical health, this role would ideally suit someone who has a keen background and passion for education and development of staff but also would like to have some hands-on clinical opportunities.

Job description Job responsibilities

  • To support the Consultant Nurse to manage initiatives that facilitate non-registered staff, pre and post registered nursing workforce development across the organisation and in collaboration with St Georges education team in relation to the Parity of Esteem agenda.
  • To ensure that Parity of Esteem courses are run in line with the expectations of all sites involved in the programme.
  • To support the Resus Lead Trainer in management of ABLS and Medical Emergency Training in the organisation, ensuring that training is compliant and issues relating to training compliance are escalated to service lines.
  • To support the Medical Devices Lead in the management and governance of devices used in the organisation.
  • To act as the subject matter expert in relation to complex service user manual handling.
  • To support the Back Care Trainer in management of Manual Handling training in the organisation, ensuring that training is compliant and issues relating to training compliance are escalated to service lines.
  • To work collaboratively with the existing Physical Health Lead Nurse to ensure that all aspects of Physical Health are monitored and documented, reporting via the relevant governance channels in the organisation.
  • To work collaboratively with the existing Physical Health Lead Nurse to ensure that wards/units are supported to provide
  • To assist in raising clinical standards and be a visible and knowledgeable resource for NMC revalidation processes, student welfare, placement coordination, mentorship and preceptees development.
  • Oversight for the implementation of strategies designed to promote consistency, foster cultural and behavioural change within clinical practice learning environments
  • Work one day/week in clinical practice to provide support, practice development and supervision expertise.
  • To work in conjuction with the nurse education/Development team and Universities to support with leading on new developments and education in relation to the improvement of physical health agenda


Person Specification Training and Qualification Essential
  • Professional qualification (RGN/RMN)
  • Relevant Master's Degree, working towards or equivalent experience
  • Teaching, Mentor and assessing Qualification
  • Significant experience of successfully operating in a politically sensitive environment
Desirable
  • PG Certificate in Education
  • ALS or equilavent
Experience Essential
  • Experience of NMC revalidation and confirmation processes
  • Demonstrable experience of managing change through working with others
  • Demonstrated experience of co-ordinating projects in complex and challenging environments
  • Experience of managing risks and reporting
  • Evidence of successful development of the clinical learning environment for students
  • Evidence of working with mentors and placement leads to improve practice experience
Desirable
  • Evidence of development of multi-professional learning opportunities
  • Working with people at all levels of the organisation
  • Experience of supervision and assessment of students within the clinical setting
  • Experience of monitoring budgets and business planning processes
Knowledge & Skills Essential

  • Experience of creating and giving presentations to a varied group of internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to analyse very complex issues where material is conflicting and drawn from multiple sources
  • Demonstrated capability to act upon incomplete information, using experience to make inferences and decision making
  • Demonstrated capabilities to manage own workload and make informed decisions in the absence of required information, working to tight and often changing timescales
  • Demonstrated capability to plan over short, medium and long-term timeframes and adjust plans and resource requirements accordingly
