An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated and committed Speech & Language Therapist to join our established specialist Learning Disability Services based in Gloucestershire.

We welcome applications from HCPC registered Speech & Language Therapists with a passion for supporting adults with learning disabilities. You will have exceptional professional interpersonal skills, enjoy working in a community environment and ideally have experience of working with people with a learning disability.

Speech and Language Therapy enjoys a high profile within the Trust and currently there over 10.0 WTE posts across our services. We enjoy excellent working relationships with colleagues from other professions and close multi-disciplinary working is firmly embedded in our culture.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide speech & language therapy input to adults with learning disabilities referred to Gloucestershire Health and Care NHS Foundation Trust Speech and Language Therapy Service
  • To provide specialist communication assessment and interventions to individuals or groups of service users
  • To provide eating and drinking assessments and interventions to individual service users
  • To provide education, training, support and advice to colleagues and carers to enable them to provide the best possible care and quality of life for clients.
  • To provide clinical supervision for less experienced Speech and Language Therapists and for Speech and Language Therapy Students
  • To carry out delegated tasks in policy development

Job description Job responsibilities

You will work alongside other dedicated colleagues from psychiatry, psychology, nursing, physiotherapy and occupational therapy, to share knowledge and skills. You will be expected to liaise and support service users, carers and professionals across services and agencies.

We offer excellent line management, clinical support and supervision. Ongoing professional development CPD is actively encouraged and supported.
  • To assess, develop and implement Specialist Speech and Language Therapy treatment and intervention; ensuring that service users are involved in the planning and prioritisation of their care plans wherever possible.
  • To demonstrate a high level of clinical effectiveness, using evidence based practice, adapting practice to meet individual service users circumstances; including due regard for cultural and linguistic differences, and by evaluating outcomes
  • To provide specialist advice to others regarding the management and care of service users/service users with communication and/or feeding and swallowing difficulties
  • To plan and prioritise workload, exercising autonomous professional responsibility for the assessment, treatment and discharge of service users with communication and/or feeding and swallowing difficulties
  • To demonstrate good negotiation skills across a range of issues and to negotiate with others regarding complex case management issues

This post requires the post holder to be able to undertake all statutory and mandatory training and post holders must be able to undertake physical interventions. Fitness for physical intervention will be assessed by Occupational Health.

Person Specification Qualifications Essential
  • Recognised Speech & Language Therapy Degree Qualification or equivalent
  • Health and Care Professions Council - Licence to Practice
  • Registered Member of Royal College of Speech & Language Therapist
  • RCSLT accredited training in dysphagia management
Desirable
  • Evidence of successful completion of specialist short courses
  • Membership of relevant Special Interest Groups
  • Evidence of post-graduate training in learning disabilities / mental health needs
Experience Essential
  • Experience as a Speech and Language Therapist people with learning disabilities or transferable skills from other clinical populations
  • Computer literate with specific experience of using IT System, the internet and e-mail
Desirable
  • Experience of using an intranet system
  • Managing a learning disability caseload
