This is a fixed term opportunity that has become available due to the current post holder going on a six-month secondment within the Trust. The successful candidate will have a CCT in General Adult Psychiatry or have completed Dual Training, and will be working alongside a full time Old Age Consultant Psychiatrist. This is a full time post, with flexible working hours subject to negotiation.

Main duties of the job

  • To provide a liaison psychiatric service to Barnet Hospital.
  • To provide clinical and professional leadership within the post
  • To work collaboratively with colleagues in specialties in both trusts.
  • To take part in management activities related to the post and the wider service within which it is embedded
  • To have an integral role in the development of the service and the development of clinical pathways and priorities of the wider service-line
  • To comply with all legal obligations covering clinical practice for example, Mental Capacity Act, Mental Health Act, and the Codes of Practice
  • To comply with procedures in ensuring quality in the service

Job description Job responsibilities

Clinical Work

The post-holder will provide clinical input to all patients including both working age and older adults.

For older adults there is a clinical focus on:
  • Patients with dementia
  • Patients with delirium
  • End of life care

For working age adults there is a clinical focus on:
  • Patients with self-harm and attempted suicide
  • Patients with alcohol and substance misuse problems
  • Patients with conversion and somatisation disorders (medically unexplained symptoms)
  • Pregnant and postnatal patients with serious mental illness
  • Supporting patients with severe and enduring mental illness on medical and surgical wards

Activities will include:
  • Reviewing medical records, including relevant primary care records as appropriate
  • Discussion with referrers and other clinicians; working with the NMUH multi-disciplinary teams
  • Clinical recommendations with reference to current mental health legislation
  • Psychopharmacological treatment and brief eclectic psychological therapy
  • Advice to acute trust clinical staff regarding aspects of clinical care, including discussion about need for psychiatric referral
  • Taking the medical lead in relation to Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act

Support and Leadership

The post-holder will provide support for other liaison team staff for all patients including both working age and older adults. The post-holder will set high standards in clinical care and drive high standards in the Liaison Psychiatry Team. This will involve:
  • Discussing and reviewing patients seen by other members of the Liaison Psychiatry Team
  • Taking an active role in handover
  • Clinical supervision of some Liaison Psychiatry Team staff
  • Ensuring appropriate clinical documentation.


Person Specification Qualifications and Experience Essential
  • Full Registration with the General Medical Council
  • Certificate of Completion of Training in General Adult Psychiatry
  • Experience in Liaison Psychiatry
  • Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists
  • Section 12(2) Approval. Eligible to act as RC for detained patients
  • Registered for the Continuing Professional Development Programme in the Royal College of Psychiatrists
  • Clinical Experience in at least three of the following patient groups: .Patients with physical and mental health co-morbidity, Self-harm and attempted suicide, Alcohol and substance misuse problems, Conversion and somatisation disorders (medically unexplained symptoms), Pregnant and postnatal patients with serious mental illness, Delirium and Dementia
Desirable
  • Experience in Older Adults Psychiatry
  • Training in the full range of effective therapeutic techniques to include psycho-education, medication and psychological therapies
  • Endorsement in liaison psychiatry
Teaching and Training Essential
  • Experience in multidisciplinary teaching
Desirable
  • Qualification in teaching
  • Participation in dementia teaching programme for acute trust staff
  • Experience in designing educational programmes
Research Desirable
  • Co-operation in clinical research
Service Development Desirable
  • Experience in developing a service component relevant to Liaison Psychiatry
  • Experience of leading management projects within a mental health Trust
IT Experience and Skills Essential
  • Experience in data gathering and management
  • Basic computer skills, including ability to use e-mail and Internet
Personal Skills Essential
  • Ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team
  • Enthusiasm and commitment to the NHS
  • Highest level of integrity
