An exciting opportunity has arisen for band 5 qualified Mental Health Nurses (RMN) to work with the Gloucestershire Health and Care NHS trust (GHC) in our award-winning Wotton Lawn Hospital.

Wotton Lawn is an 88 bed Acute Mental Health Hospital situated in the centre of the historic city of Gloucester and provides inpatient services to the population of Gloucestershire. It offers a vital service to the citizens of Gloucestershire in supporting and rehabilitating those suffering from mild to severe mental health problems. All wards are serviced by an enthusiastic, multi-professional team of people, including Doctors, Nurses, Allied Healthcare Professionals and Therapists who are supported by Ward Secretaries and Hotel Services Staff. At GHC NHS Trust we pride ourselves on providing care and support to those experiencing mental health and learning disabilities in order to support them through their recovery.

Main duties of the job

We are now seeking a highly motivated and committed band 5 Nurse's for Greyfriars PICU, Greyfriars PICU is a 10 bedded Psychiatric Intensive Care unit, providing care for people with severe and enduring mental health needs. As the ideal candidate for this post you would be an RMN qualified nurse seeking an opportunity to make a real difference to people's lives, with excellent communication skills and a passion for helping those experiencing a mental health concern.

We provide a service to our patients 7 days a week, 24 hours a day, so we are looking for flexible people who would like to work on this rewarding service to cover shifts throughout the week at varying times of the day.

In return for your commitment we will provide the opportunity to participate in a comprehensive induction and Mental Health Nurse development programme which ensures that you feel fully supported with the right tools to undertake this challenging but rewarding job. Professionals will participate in a variety of practice development initiatives. We will provide you with access to Post Registration training courses including those in teaching and assessing and a range of other training to help staff meet both their own development needs and the developing needs of this service. CPD will be provided by our academic local university partners.

This post requires the post holder to be able to undertake all statutory and mandatory training and post holders must be able to undertake physical interventions. Fitness for physical intervention will be assessed by Occupational Health.

Person Specification QUALIFICATIONS Essential
  • Degree in Mental Health Nursing (or equivalent) with current NMC registration
  • Appraisal Skills (appraisee within 3 months)
  • Risk Assessment & Management (within 3 months)
  • Management of Violence & Aggression (within 3 months)
Desirable
  • PMVA
  • Supervision skills (Clinical)
LENGTH AND / OR NATURE OF EXPERIENCE Essential
  • A fully inclusive undergraduate training programme that involves a broad range of experiential learning opportunities.
  • Completion of the Trust's Preceptorship Programme at earliest opportunity.
Desirable
  • Teaching and presentation experience
  • Experience working within the mental health field
PROFESSIONAL / MANAGERIAL / SPECIALIST KNOWLEDGE Essential
  • Basic First Aid
  • Basic Life Support
  • Knowledge of a wide variety of treatment, exercise techniques and sporting activities
  • Good knowledge of Health and Safety factors relating to sporting activities and interventions
  • Knowledge of a variety of general physical health conditions and their effects on the individuals' capacity to participate in exercise.
  • Knowledge of de-escalation skills as appropriate for this field (within 3 months)
  • A good working knowledge and understanding of the Mental Health Act (within 3 months).
  • Basic level of computer competence, eg e-mail, word processing.
  • A good working knowledge of the Care Programme Approach
  • Knowledge of functional and organic mental health conditions and how these impact on the individuals' physical health and capability to participate in exercise, plus their impact on other forms of treatment.
  • Knowledge of risk assessment and specialist precautions during everyday activities (within 3 months)
Desirable
  • European Computer Driving Licence
  • Knowledge of health and safety issues relating to materials and equipment, including issues concerning provision of equipment etc. to patients.
  • Working Knowledge of Trust and Care Group Clinical Guidelines, Policies and Procedures
  • Awareness and understanding of NICE guidelines (and other national guidelines) relating to working age adult mental health.
  • Awareness of Health and Well-being recommendations.
