We are looking for an HCPC registered dietitian with experience of working in critical care to join our team of ICU dietitians at Southampton General Hospital on a permanent basis. The post holder will provide specialist nutrition support across our three adult intensive care units - general, cardiac and neurosciences. Flexible working options will be considered.

UHS has a state-of-the-art ICU, and as a tertiary centre for many services including HPB, upper GI surgery, haematology and intestinal failure, we provide care for some of the South's most critically ill patients. You will join our team of experienced critical care dietitians and, as a member of the multidisciplinary team you will participate in ward rounds and MDT meetings. The department of dietetics and speech and language therapy employs approximately 130 staff, providing both acute and community services in adults and paediatrics across a range of specialities.

Job responsibilities



You will Work as an integral member of the critical care multidisciplinary teams, providing a highly specialist clinical dietetic service to patients on our intensive care units. Work both autonomously and within multidisciplinary teams to optimise care and implement highly specialised enteral and parenteral nutrition. Contribute to the development of the dietetic service to critical care. Facilitate the implementation of national standards and guidelines relevant to your clinical speciality. Undertake audit, evidence-based projects/research and review of practice making recommendations for future developments and clinical practice.

WHAT WERE LOOKING FORWe are looking for someone who has a keen interest and significant experience in complex nutrition support and critical care, with evidence of relevant, strong clinical skills. Flexibility and the ability to prioritise and manage a busy, complex caseload is essential. Strong team working skills are essential and you must be able to demonstrate evidence of this. You must have excellent communication skills as well as an empathic nature. You must be able to demonstrate the ability to work within an MDT as a highly specialist dietitian and have the confidence to present and discuss your professional opinion with colleagues.

Qualifications, knowledge and experience


  • Degree or equivalent in Nutrition and Dietetics
  • Masters level qualification or equivalent experience
  • HCPC (Health and Care professions Council) registered dietitian (RD
  • Evidence of post-graduate training in relevant speciality
  • Experience of supervising staff
  • Experience and involvement with training
  • Evidence of extensive dietetic knowledge and highly specialist expertise in relevant specialist area with recent experience demonstrating this
  • Ability to carry out physical anthropometric measurements and assess nutritional status
  • Demonstration of understanding of clinical governance and its implications for service delivery


  • Member of British Dietetic Association (BDA) and relevant specialist groups
  • Experience of leading or co-ordinating audit or research work
