  • To assume a clinical role as part of a comprehensive physiotherapy service in the tone management of children with cerebral palsy and other neurological disorders, requiring a range of interventions including neurosurgery.
  • To provide advanced assessment and treatment, formulated around evidence-based practice and recognised national standards.
  • To join an integrated service for patients with neurological impairment, in conjunction with the neurology therapy team and with the support of the Physiotherapy Clinical Specialist.
  • To work as an autonomous clinician using specialist skills to assess, plan, implement and evaluate interventions, in the treatment of patients within this specialty who have acute and long term, serious and life limiting medical conditions.
  • To use highly developed analytical and judgment skills to be directly involved in the clinical decision-making process, using robust clinical reasoning.
  • To provide appropriate specialist and professional advice, education and liaison to patients, carers, colleagues, and all members of the wider multi agency teams to promote optimal therapy management.
  • To take an active role in the provision of in-service training and education of colleagues, students, nursing and medical staff, regarding physiotherapy management.
  • To support the wider Neurology team in the management of children and young people with Neurodisability.

Main duties of the job

  • To be professionally and legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of own work including the management of caseload. To ensure a high standard of clinical care (for the patients under your management) and support other team members/wider MDT to do likewise.
  • To demonstrate the ability to carry out advanced physiotherapy assessment (standardised and non-standardised) and highly specialised interventions including manual therapy techniques and therapeutic handling and demonstrate highly developed dexterity, co-ordination and palpatory sensory skills for assessment and manual treatment of patients.
  • To carry out assessment of patients as an autonomous practitioner, including those with highly complex presentations, where expert opinion may differ, using clinical reasoning skills, knowledge of evidence-based practice and expertise to determine appropriate care plans utilising highly specialist treatment skills and a wide range of treatment options.
  • To contribute to accurate prognoses and recommend best course of intervention, developing comprehensive management plans, guided by clearly defined principles or occupational policies.
  • To refer to other healthcare professionals and agencies as appropriate as part of the overall management of the child to ensure holistic care.

    Alder Hey Children's Hospital is a tertiary care facility for Cheshire, Merseyside, North Wales and wider areas in the North-West. The neurology and neurosurgical department provide specialist care for children with neurological presentations who require in-patient or out-patient assessment.

    Person Specification

    Education & Training

    Essential

    • Diploma/ Degree in Physiotherapy, recognised by the Health Professions Council (HPC)
    • Member of HCPC


    Desirable

    • Member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapists
    • Member of Association Paediatric Chartered Physiotherapists


    Experience

    Essential

    • Minimum 5 years post registration experience
    • Minimum 2 years at band 6 level in management of paediatric patients with cerebral palsy and other neurological deficits in a multi-agency team


    Desirable

    • Experience of working with children with cerebral palsy in a variety of settings


    Knowledge

    Essential

    • In depth knowledge of cerebral palsy and other paediatric neurological conditions
    • Evidence of Post Graduate Courses and CPD relevant to tone management in patients with a neurological deficit


    Desirable

    • Experience of operational management of staff
    • Evidence of Post Graduate Courses relevant to neurology


    Skills

    Essential

    • Ability to demonstrate highly specialist assessment, treatment and management skills within the clinical speciality demonstrating advanced clinical reasoning skills
    • Ability to facilitate and participate in multi-disciplinary team working
