This is an exciting opportunity for a part-time Specialist Diabetic Midwife role within St Michael's and Weston hospitals.

The applicant must be an existing Band 6 midwife with experience of caring caring for women / birthing people with diabetes, both pre-existing and gestational. They will strive to provide excellent evidence based care, improving outcomes and experience for those using the service.

Main duties of the job

  • The applicant will work alongside our current Maternal Medicine Team providing care for women / birthing people with existing diabetes and those with a new diagnosis.
  • Support the Band 7 Specialist Diabetic Midwife in educating and supporting women and their families at all stages of their journey with Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM), by providing sensitive and complex information in a compassionate and kind manner
  • Develop the knowledge and experience to make effective diagnostic and therapeutic decisions for women with GDM
  • Support the Band 7 Specialist Midwife in providing specialised midwifery care to women with all types of diabetes, throughout both the antenatal and postnatal periods
  • Develop individualised management plans for women with GDM, which may include lifestyle advice, initiation of oral therapies or insulin with ongoing dose titration or other complex scenarios
  • Participate in both local and national clinical audit, supporting changes and improvements which may result from audit findings
  • Liaise with a variety of professionals within both hospital and community settings to help optimise outcomes for women with diabetes
  • The successful applicant will be required to work within an existing team and ensure excellent communication and a willingness to help develop staff for the future. They must work across both St. Michael's and Weston sites and able to provide home visits to support women and their families. Essential to hold a driving license

Person Specification

Knowledge and Experience


  • Post registration experience
  • Experience of caring for women/birthing people with existing / new diagnosis of diabetes
  • Participate in both local and national clinical audit, supporting changes and improvements which may result from audit findings


  • Understand diagnostic criteria for GDM and recognise potential undiagnosed pre-existing diabetes.
  • Knowledge and expertise of the complications of pregnancy in women with pre-existing or GDM and an understanding of how to mitigate risk.

Skills and Abilities


  • Ability to Work in collaboration with Obstetricians, Midwives, Maternity Support Workers, Endocrinologists, Diabetes Specialist Nurses and Dietitians and the external multi-disciplinary team, to ensure that women with diabetes receive high quality care.


  • Demonstrate appropriate record keeping skills.
  • Ability to provide appropriate education about GDM and its management to women and their families, recognising that complex clinical situations are difficult to explain.

Qualifications and Training


  • Registered Midwife
  • Degree qualification or equivalent
  • Assessing in Practice Level 2 or Teaching and Assessing in Practice 3 or equivalent
  • Holds a driving licence and has access to a car for work
