An exciting opportunity has arisen within a friendly and supportive team at East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust. The Infection Prevention & Control Team are searching for a dynamic and innovative Infection Prevention and Control Trainee Nurse.

The role includes assisting in the surveillance and investigation of health care associated infections, educating, training and supporting staff, managing the day-to-day workload, working closely with front-line clinical colleagues establishing collaborative working relationships and managing outbreaks. There will also be the opportunity to take part in improvement projects.

Salary will be dependent on experience and knowledge.

The applicant must have own transport as they will be expected to travel between sites during the working day sometimes at short notice.

Main duties of the job

As this is a training post, previous infection prevention & control experience is not essential. However, the applicant should show a strong interest in infection prevention/patient safety and must be able to demonstrate a passion for protecting patients from preventable harm. They should also have experience working as a band 5 nurse in the acute hospital setting, have excellent inter-personal skills and act as a role model to inspire others.

Job responsibilities

JOB SUMMARY
  • To work effectively as an independent practitioner or member of the Infection Prevention Nursing Team providing infection prevention advice for patients, staff and visitors
  • Undertake prompt and regular review of patients with alert organisms/alert conditions who pose a risk of infection to others/are at risk of infection from others as advised by Senior Colleagues
  • Carry out duties relating to the prevention of infection including audit of clinical practice, local education and training and information provision for patients carers and staff.
  • Identify, investigate and monitor hazardous practice, ineffective procedures or environmental hazards. Communicates actions required for safe infection control practices.
  • Identify areas where change is required for best practice and facilitate as required.
  • Undertake and coordinate prompt and regular review of patients with alert organisms /alert conditions who pose a risk of infection to others/are at risk of infection from others
  • Advise the Multi-professional Team on Infection Prevention and Control precautions following review of specific patients and for general situations using knowledge and referring to Senior Colleagues for further advice if needed.
  • Arrange MRSA decolonisation treatment where appropriate
  • Liaise with patients to ensure correct procedure for MRSA decolonisation.
  • To assist in implementing and monitoring Trust Infection Control Guidelines and Policies working closely with Clinical Staff to ensure that guidelines are understood and adhered to.
  • Work alongside staff in clinical areas to ensure compliance with infection prevention policies and practices and escalate noncompliance to Senior Colleagues.
  • To take on the roles and responsibilities of leadership and supervision.
  • To maintain a high profile in Clinical areas and acting as a role model.
  • Ensure accurate, contemporaneous and timely care records, both written and electronic and ensure the safety and confidentiality of such records.

COMMUNICATION
  • Maintain effective communication with all patients, carers and members of the healthcare team including other healthcare providers as appropriate
  • Contribute to the provision of highly complex, sensitive and sometimes contentious information to patients and relatives on the prevention and control of infection to assist them to make informed choices about the care they receive
  • Assess and advise patients and relatives in distressing situations and escalate to a senior member of the Infection Control Team.
  • Assist in monitoring, evaluating and updating IPC measures based upon current evidence-based national standards, and provide feedback following audit to relevant managers
  • In collaboration with others, ensure the development and implementation of surveillance programmes and provide timely feedback of results
  • Collect data for use by the Infection Prevention and Control Team, Wards/Departments and the Infection Prevention Committee (ICC) and other relevant Trust Committees.

TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT
  • Take responsibility for continuing personal and professional development, with reference to the framework provided by the IPS Competencies for Infection Prevention and Control Practitioners and maintain a portfolio of evidence of competence
  • Engage with Appraisal and Annual Personal Development Planning.
  • Contribute to the provision of Infection Prevention and Control training and education for all grades of staff as required, including Infection Prevention Liaison Members.
  • Complete all Trust mandatory training courses

ORGANISATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Work at all times as a role model for others in the delivery of high standards of evidenced based practice and compliance with organisational policy.
  • With colleagues contribute to achievement of the ward/department audit programme agreed as part of the Infection Prevention Annual Plan.
  • Liaise with Occupational Health in issues related to the control and prevention of infection amongst all healthcare staff.
  • To liaise with bed managers to ensure effective utilisation of beds with regard to infection control to ensure that susceptible patients and patients with a known cross-infection risk are suitably placed to minimise the risk of infection.

PROFFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Adhere to the NMC Code of Professional Conduct
  • Undertake Revalidation with the NMC as required.
  • To have up to date registration with the NMC

Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered Nurse with valid NMC registration


Desirable

  • Further education around specific infection prevention topics such as Health care Associated Infections. Evidence of continuing professional development


Experience

Essential

  • Relevant experience working at AFC Band 5 (or equivalent) within an acute healthcare environment.
  • Demonstrates an interest in Infection Prevention


Desirable

  • Experience as Infection Prevention and Control Link Worker or able to demonstrate specific application of Infection Prevention and Control knowledge in clinical areas


Experience

  • Demonstrates the ability to prioritise and organise their work and ability to manage varying work patterns


Desirable

  • The ability to effectively communicate the infection prevention and control agenda in relation to the health and social care act 2008.
  • Demonstrate ability in the use computer software packages internet and hospital networks
  • Ability to analyse and interpret data related to infection prevention and control
