An opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Psychiatrist to join our Psychiatric Intensive Care Team - this comes at an exciting time, as our team is expanding and will soon be moving from our current unit, situated at Stepping Hill Hospital, to a new 10 bedded unit at Tameside.

At present, our purpose-built unit is being constructed at the Tameside General Hospital site and it will be ready for us to join in Summer 2022. Our Current unit will then be extensively refurbished to provide specialist intensive care for 7 female service users.

Main duties of the job

Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust (PCNFT) is a Specialist Mental Health Trust, formed in April 2002 by the joining of the mental health services and psychiatric departments of the towns of Bury, Rochdale, Oldham, and Tameside. The new Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit at Tameside General Hospital is a ten-bedded male ward and the team receives referrals for patients covered by Pennine Care NHS FT from various sources including adult acute wards, police, prisons and rarely from the community teams. This post would ideally suit those who have previous Consultant Psychiatry experience but also new CCT holders who want to develop this new Unit and strengthen the pathways.

Key Responsibilities of the Post:Core clinical work (consistent with Royal College of Psychiatry requirements)Assume role of RC, take clinical responsibility for the in-patients, and lead the multi-disciplinary team to deliver the Care Programme Approach review meetings. The appointee will maintain approval as an Approved Clinician and under Section 12 of The MHA 1983 (amended 2007).

We would also encourage applications from individuals with a lived experience of mental illness.

Job description Job responsibilities

The successful applicant will be Responsible Clinician (RC) for up to 10 male patients. The average length of stay is four weeks. The consultant would be expected to liaise with the referring teams during the admission and discharge process. Occasionally patients will need higher levels of care or rehabilitation on discharge and it is helpful therefore for the PICU consultant to be part of the RHSD consultant body, and to attend RHSD referrals meetings as necessary.

While primarily responsible for delivering a quality clinical service, the consultant psychiatrist is also expected to be actively involved in the strategic development of the team and broader services, being involved with the team manager and locality manager in helping to steer the development of the service in line with the strategic direction of the organisation.
