An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our Oncology / Haematology Team at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals trust as a Practice Educator and SACT data support Nurse. This is a fantastic opportunity to lead in the development and delivery of the educational framework for healthcare professionals working within Oncology / Haematology, particularly in relation to SACT delivery across our three outpatient SACT units, Haematology and Oncology wards. The post involves working directly alongside trained staff, students and support staff to raise the standard of clinical practice in line with evidence-based frameworks and procedures/protocols relevant to the directorate (including support in completing the UKONS SACT passport). As well as this, the post holder will lead the management of SACT data to meet with the current national requirements for the SACT database.

The post is offered as a 12 months fixed term contract / secondment (please ensure agreement has been gained from department to support secondment before applying)

The applicant must be a healthcare professional competent in delivery of SACT, with specialist skills, knowledge and experience in Oncology, Haematology and chemotherapy administration.

Main duties of the job

Designing, developing, implementing and evaluating educational programmes within the ward/department area which meet the development needs of nurses and other staff.

Creating a suitable learning environment for staff collaborate with nursing leads, specialists and other disciplines to provide regular teaching and learning opportunities for all staff.

Working directly alongside trained staff, students and support staff to raise the standard of clinical practice in line with evidence-based frameworks and procedures/protocols.

Reviewing, implement and facilitate fit for purpose ward induction programmes for the wards/ departments.

To ensure all nursing staff have the appropriate access, knowledge and training to utilise the e-prescribing system.

Supporting the unit and ward managers with staff completing the SACT passports.

Developing and maintain your own and others teaching and presentation skills.

Work with the trust practice facilitator team, specialist teams and departmental/ ward managers to ensure the training needs of the qualified and unqualified nursing staff is met.

Collaborative working with UHCW and partners to amend and implement systems on MOSAIQ ensuring that the data captured meets with the current national requirements for the SACT database.

Identify ways to improve the quality of SACT data being captured.

Verify SACT data queries and completion on a monthly basis.

Provide support for staff members using MOSAIQ to ensure that they are using the system effectively.

Job responsibilities

Job Purpose: To create and implement relevant education and development pathways for qualified and unqualified nursing staff working within haematology and oncology. In collaboration with Cancer services, design education programmes/training that facilitate acquisition of the necessary skills, knowledge and competency within haematology and oncology , this includes haematological and oncological conditions, SACT administration and management of oncological emergencies. To promote and contribute to the implementation of evidence based nursing practice . To promote and lead in the provision of a high standard of holistic patient-centred care. Lead the management of SACT data to meet with the current national requirements for the SACT database. In collaboration with the Lead Chemotherapy Nurse and UHCW, identify strategies to identify, improve and maintain the quality and completeness of the SACT data. SACT Data responsibilities Collaborative working with UHCW and partners to amend and implement systems on MOSAIQ ensuring that the data captured meets with the current national requirements for the SACT database. Provide support for staff members using MOSAIQ to ensure that they are using the system effectively. Clinical Responsibilities Assist in the setting of standards of nursing care and the maintaining and evaluation if these standards. To regularly work in the clinical areas as part of the clinical team. Supervise all grades of nursing staff to ensure that the highest standards of patient care is maintained at all times. Review, assess and evaluate the clinical areas to provide assurance that the care is consistent and remains of a high standard within all areas. Acts as a mentor for both pre and post registration nursing staff. Support staff in the acquisition of essential and expanded clinical skills as appropriate e.g. Cannulation & venepuncture, ward management, oral & IVI administration of medicines. Provide support with the administration of emergency SACT to patients being nursed in areas that do not deliver this treatment e.g ITU. Human Resources and workforce Provide support in the development of action plans in relation to clinical competence required of individuals being managed through the relevant trust policies e.g performance management policy. Assist in the support of achievement of action plans in relation to clinical competence required of individuals being managed by the relevant trust policies e.g performance management policy. Ensures the implementation of educational programmes within the ward/department area meet the development needs of the service and the workforce. Participate in annual staff appraisal, staff development and in-service training. Be appraised at least annually and contribute to own personal development plan (PDP). Assist with recruitment and selection of staff , supporting recruitment initiatives, e.g. job fairs and open days. Quality and Performance Assist with the development of policies, procedures, guidelines and protocols Using analysis skills develop appropriate educational strategies in response to evaluations of care, audit, risk data and user experience, to address complex problems e.g. poor performance, risk management, clinical governance issues. Actively disseminate developments in nursing practice and research findings through lectures, formal and informal teaching. Maintain awareness of clinical educational developments and contemporary issues in nursing and health care. Assist in identifying implications for practice and creating solutions in response to service re-design. Assist in auditing clinical practice, evaluating the impact of any new practices implemented and reporting to relevant stakeholders with recommendations for improvement. To work with key stakeholders in the evaluation, monitoring and improvement of SACT data and to raise any concerns or issues with the lead chemotherapy nurse. Maintain accurate records and record statistical information as required demonstrating service development. Personal and Professional responsibilities To maintain personal and professional development by attending appropriate training / educational opportunities. Practice in accordance with the Nursing Council Code of Conduct and applicable legislation. Maintain an accurate overview of current advances in knowledge and practice. To work in accordance with local and national policies and procedures. To demonstrate evidence of continuous professional development in line with NMC revalidation requirements to maintain evidence base of current developments within the NHS. Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered Nurse (Part 1)
  • Post Registration Qualification in Oncology/Haematology and or Chemotherapy
  • Educated to first degree level
  • Recognised NMC teaching and assessing qualification


Desirable

  • MSc or working towards
  • Leadership qualification
  • Advanced communication skills training
  • Non-medical prescriber.


Experience

Essential

  • Significant post registration experience at minimum band 6.
  • Able to demonstrate highly developed specialist knowledge of patient group.
  • Working knowledge of national policy relating to chemotherapy services.
  • Evidence of teaching experience both formal and informal.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
