The post holder will contribute to the development and provision of services in relation to children and young people with a suspected or diagnosis of an eating disorder and other mental health presentations. This will include assessments, planning, and supporting with the delivery of care within ANHSFT inpatient services.

The role will also involve facilitating a closer working relationship between Child and Adolescent Mental Health (CAMHS) and Paediatric services based around shared knowledge and joint working. It aims to ensure that the young people cared for within services have both their physical and mental health needs met whilst accessing services within ANHSFT.

As a subject matter expert, the post holder will be expected to offer advice, training, and support to staff, children and young people, families, and carers.

The post holder will be expected to provide a high standard of care through clinical risk and mental health assessment, formulation and short-term contingency planning to children and young people.

Main duties of the job

  • To act as a specialist resource clinician offering support and clinical advice to staff, children, young people, families, and carers.
  • To act as an expert resource within the hospital in matters relating to the care and treatment of children and young people presenting with mental health problems.
  • Contribute to care plans for children and young people admitted to the Children's Unit with a mental health illness or confirmed or suspected eating
  • Develop and deliver training packages on eating disorders and mental health disorders for hospital-based paediatric nurses and staff within other departments such the emergency department.
  • Deliver a range of hospital interventions for complex physical and mental health presentations, which require high levels of assessment, advice and consultation.
  • Use a variety of techniques to communicate effectively with children and young people according to their age, understanding, language and ability. This may include working with interpreters, utilising play skills with children and adapted language for young people with learning
  • To participate in the assessing, planning, implementation, and evaluation of individualised plan of care. Providing early intervention to ensure the safe discharge of children and young people, working in collaboration with the medical team, CAMHS and community services with the aim of avoiding

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • RMN and/or RN (Child) or RN (Public health - SN/HV)
  • Current NMC registration


Desirable

  • ENB 998 or equivalent
  • Evidence of study to a degree level


Experience

Essential

  • Experience of working with a CAMHS team or with children with a diagnosed eating disorder or other mental illness


Desirable

  • Experience of working with children or young people
  • Clinical experience within the NHS


Knowledge

Essential

  • Knowledge of prominent and topical issues relating to child and adolescent mental health service
  • Knowledge of evidence based intervention for young people in emotional distress and use of individual therapy approaches
  • Understanding of physical health monitoring for acutely unwell service users Demonstrate ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate care
  • Updated research and evidence based practice
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety issues Data protection
  • Awareness of legislation relevant to post
