This is role requires collaborative and flexible approach, and the ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team. The service is currently operational Monday to Friday (8:00 am to 8:00 pm). The Dental Radiology Department is rapidly expanding and currently supports the following services:
  • Intraoral and extraoral imaging for the Dental Directorate, including Acute Dental Care and Paediatric dentistry
  • Salivary gland service, which offers minimal invasive intervention such as balloon ductoplasty and stone retrieval with the aid of fluoroscopy
  • Undergraduate Dental students supervision
  • Cone Beam Computed Tomography Service

Main duties of the job

  • Produce top-tier radiographic images using a variety of x-ray equipment
  • Adapt standard techniques to accommodate patient limitations
  • Proficient in Dental Panoramic Tomography (DPT), Cephalogram, Oblique laterals, intraoral periapical, intraoral bitewing, and occlusals
  • Actively participate in the Quality Assurance programme within the department
  • Ensure precision and excellence in radiographic processes through quality control
  • Take a responsible role in the reject film analysis programme
  • Contribute to maintaining high standards in imaging services

Who we are:

The team currently comprises of 20 Radiographers, 4 Dental Nurses, 12 Imaging Support Staff, 2 admin staff and 6 Consultants in Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology. As such, we are the biggest Dental Radiology Department in the UK.

We also work in collaboration with King's College London University and together we strive to deliver research-enhanced and innovative training with a high level of clinical experience.

The department is operational from 8:00 am until 8:00 pm (Monday to Friday). The successful candidate will be required to work 37.5 hours per week.

We are looking for a Radiographer to join our multidisciplinary team. The focus of this post is to provide high quality radiographs of the teeth and maxillofacial region, supervising undergraduate and post-graduate dental students, taking part in quality assurance and improvement programmes.

Job responsibilities

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Produce high quality radiographic images using a range of x-ray equipment, taking into account patient limitations and adapting standard techniques where necessary. These will include Dental Panoramic Tomography (DPT), Cephalogram, Oblique laterals, intraoral periapical, intraoral bitewing and occlusals.
  • Comply with all ionising radiation regulations and observe the local rules for radiation protection
  • Act as an IR(ME)R operator (under the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2017) as defined in Department protocols.
  • Use the X-ray equipment and accessories correctly and keep them clean, and report any faults or unsafe condition in any item of equipment to a senior member of staff.
  • Participate in the Quality Assurance programme which operates within the department.
  • Take responsibility for the reject film analysis programme
  • To communicate and co-ordinate effectively with clinical staff, professional bodies and external agencies.
  • Communicate with other healthcare groups and work in collaboration with them regarding the patients continuing care.
  • To recognise and implement the use of appropriate communication aids to patients and carers.
  • Provide advice and reassurance regarding patients with emergency dental problems.
  • To provide clinical teaching where appropriate for undergraduates, postgraduates and other dental care professionals.
  • To assist in the supervision and training of student Dental Nurses by explanation, demonstration. Liaising with the Dental Nursing Academy where appropriate.

Professional/clinical responsibilities
  • Act as a role model, demonstrating high standards of care and providing clinical leadership in the care of patients within the dental hospital
  • To provide advice and help for clinicians and dental staff providing care for patients throughout the dental directorate
  • Ensure continuity of a high standard of evidence based Dental Nursing care throughout the Dental Nursing Service.
  • To provide clinical support to the multidisciplinary team and professions complimentary to dentistry.
  • Work independently and professionally accountable for all work undertaken and to practice at an advanced level of professional autonomy and accountability in line with the GDC principals of care, the Trusts values and behaviours and GSTT Trust Polices.
  • Achieve and maintain high standards of cleanliness and infection control in line with current codes of practice.
  • Promote excellent standards by ensuring that patients privacy and dignity are implemented and advocating for patients at all times.
  • Promote patient feedback and ensure that patients are given the opportunity to do so after every appointment.
  • Undertake administrative duties where appropriate including keeping accurate information into the clinical notes records.

Management and Leadership
  • Advise and liaise with the Dental Sister, Clinical Lead/Service Lead, Head of Nursing, regarding particular needs, problems or deficiencies in service.
  • Attend relevant meetings when invited departmental, ensuring that information is disseminated appropriately when required.
  • Participate in the provision of the dental undergraduate/post graduate teaching programme including examinations.
  • Maintain awareness of new developments and new dental techniques, and ensure that this information is passed on to dental nurses in the department.
  • Encourage the Dental nursing team to bring forward suggestions and ideas to improve patient care


Person Specification

Knowledge/ Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered Dental Nurse (GDC)


Desirable

  • MSc in Radiography or equivalent


Skills

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Knowledge and understanding of the organisational Data protection and Confidentiality Policies

  • Experience of working within a Radiology department and taking intraoral and extraoral radiographs


Qualifications

Essential

  • NEBDN Certificate in Dental Nursing or NVQ Level III in Oral Health Dental Nursing
  • BDA/NEBDN Qualification in Dental Radiography
  • Evidence of commitment to continuing professional development
