  • Having undertaken additional approved training and assessment as part of the role the post holder will work autonomously as a Nurse Practitioner injector within agreed trust guidelines and local policies and protocols for the best outcome of nursing care.
  • To administer Anti-VEGF agents which are given for a variety of previously untreatable eye conditions and the indications for their use are increasing. Their use in Age Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD), diabetics with macular oedema (DMO) and Retinal Vein Occlusions with macular oedema (RVO) is approved by NICE and most patients require multiple injections.
  • To be responsible for the assessment of care needs and the planning, implementation and evaluation of that care of the ophthalmic patient intra-vitreal injection clinics.
  • To act as a resource and facilitator to educate and train other healthcare professionals as required.

To develop the role according to need, participate in audit and research projects, assisting with the development of policies and procedures as required

Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as 'Priority' and 'At Risk' status including NHS at Risk staff throughout Devon who is able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.

Main duties of the job

  • Works as an autonomous practitioner within the Ophthalmology team delivering treatment for Age Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD), diabetics with macular oedema (DMO) and Retinal Vein Occlusions with macular oedema (RVO). The patient remains under the care of a named consultant ophthalmic surgeon at all times.
  • Demonstrates highly developed clinical nursing knowledge and skills in administering Intravitreal injections
  • Manage own caseload within the nurse led injection clinics (approx. 14-16 patients per session) and co-ordinate patient journey within the ophthalmic macular service.
  • Providing verbal complex and sensitive information reinforced by way of patient information leaflets specifically relating to the patient problem. Identify methods of self-help along with rationale for any treatment and its administration. Contact telephone numbers are detailed on these leaflets. All aspects of health promotion, health education and continuity of care are vital components within our nursing care programme.
  • Empower patient choice and involvement initiating appropriate action.
  • Empathically communicate highly sensitive information to patients, relatives and carers in a highly supportive private environment.
  • Ensure the maintenance of accurate, legible and up to date patient records.

  • Highly developed hand-eye co-ordination is essential to enable the administration of intra-vitreal injections.
  • Accountable and responsible for the care given to each patient during the nurse-led clinics of Intra vitreal injections.
  • Work with patients and carers to develop services.
  • Participate with future developments in improving nursing care within Macular treatment service.
  • Makes autonomous decisions on all aspects of clinic management of patients attending the macular nurse led clinics. This is carried out using comprehensive knowledge, skills and experience of the service. All made take into account the guidance of the nursing and midwifery council, National and local policies, procedures and protocols.
  • Recognises own limitations in the provision of clinical care and urgency of patients needs referring to other health professionals accordingly.


Person Specification

Knowledge and Experience

Essential

  • Demonstrable experience within a similar role.
  • Leadership/management training.
  • Computer literate

  • Demonstrable experience managing teams


Qualifications

Essential

  • NMC Registered
  • Proven evidence of recent Continuing Professional Development.
  • IVT injection qualification at diploma level or equivalent relevant training


Desirable

  • Post registration ophthalmic specialist qualification
  • Mentor qualification
