Stoma Care Nurse Specialist Band 7 - 37.5 hours per week

To lead, maintain and develop a clinical and effective Stoma Care/Colorectal Service to meet the needs of the patient, who will undergo Stoma/Resective Surgery for cancer of the Bladder, Bowel or related Colitic diseases.

To work as an independent practitioner, with total autonomy in the delivery of a quality Stoma Care Colorectal Service across the Trust without supervision

To maintain and develop specialist nursing support in the management of patients with bowel/bladder cancer, Renal and Inflammatory Bowel disease.

To support the Consultant Colorectal and Urology Surgeons in the provision of a safe, clinically effective patient focused service.

Job responsibilities

  • To carry continuous responsibility and accountability for the management of the Colorectal Service, making effective use of resources and ensuring the highest standards of patient care are maintained.
  • To always act in a manner consistent with the Code of Professional Conduct, carrying out his/her duties in accordance with Trust policies and procedures.
  • To demonstrate expert knowledge and skills in the clinical area.
  • To lead, support, supervise and teach all staff, acting as a role model for the staff with regard to professional behaviour and supporting the strategy for nursing and allied health professionals.
  • To maintain own clinical and professional development by keeping up to date with new trends and developments, interpret and incorporate them as necessary into your work
  • To lead, maintain and develop the stoma colorectal nursing team to provide a clinically effective, safe and quality service to all.
  • To see and assess all colorectal clients under the care of the Consultant Surgeons and prior to discharge, to promote the attainment of seamless transfer into Primary Care through follow-up home visits.

  • To advise patients and General Practitioners on the usage of stoma products.
  • To work with senior clinical and management staff in ward, clinic and primary care in the planning and develop of a Stoma Colorectal Service.
  • To take responsibility for safe and effective delivery of care, to ensure a high standard of patient care in liaison with ward staff, consultants and other professionals, evaluating and reviewing standards of care, giving professional support to the ward where necessary.


Person Specification

Essential and Desirable

Essential

  • Registered Nurse with current registration
  • Diploma/Degree or working towards
  • Evidence of skills at Band 6 Level
  • Mentorship Module or equivalent
  • Knowledge of and involvement of Governance
  • Evidence of Leadership experience
  • Excellent Understanding of Risk Management
  • Proven experience and involvement in change Management
  • Proven Practice and Professional Development
