We are in the second phase of mobilisation of these developments and this role is key to supporting the peer roles within the voluntary sector in Merton as well as any developing roles for the future. This post is full-time and based within the Recovery and Support Teams which are multidisciplinary teams providing support and treatment to adults experiencing severe and enduring mental health difficulties.

You will be responsible for the day to day functioning of these peer support services, working towards supporting these roles to develop or expand competencies within the peer support competency framework. You will need to have:
  • Personal resilience developed through managing your own lived experience and recovery will support you to be a positive role model and contribute to the creation of a culture where lived experience and expertise is recognised and valued
  • The ability to use your own lived experience as a person who has received services or actively cared for someone under the care of secondary services, to ensure the effective delivery of peer-led, recovery focussed support.
  • Experience and training in best practice and principles for peer support and ability to role model and teach these to others and a portfolio of evidence of supervising and training others
  • A background of partnership working, an understanding of the values and working practices of voluntary sector organisations and excellent communication skills to support networking


Main duties of the job

The post holder will contribute their lived experience knowledge and expertise in supporting the organisation to develop and embed peer-led recovery-focused services.
  • They will be responsible for overseeing the day to day running of peer support services within a specified borough within the community service line across the Trust to our service users and carers through elements of their recovery journey.
  • They will develop and maintain partnerships, in a specified borough, with agencies and organisations that provide peer support to the people we work with.
  • They will provide a management and supervision function to people employed by partner organisations in lived experience roles.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • To provide recovery-oriented input to those in lived experience roles in relation to supervision, urgent care issues and referrals.
  • To process referrals by communicating with referrers, VCSE partners and service users and carers (when needed) to obtain information and explain the service offer.
  • To hold a case load of clients and provide one-to-one peer support whilst they wait to access other forms of support, if demand requires.
  • In collaboration with peer support workers in VCSE organisations, and/or service users and carers, promote plans of support to optimise recovery and health and wellbeing
  • To identify risk issues related to new or existing service users (via new referrals and supervision) and take action to promote safe and effective working including escalating any concerns when necessary
  • To ensure clinical teams refer appropriate clients who are well aware of peer support and consent being supported by a peer support worker in a VCSE partner organisations.
  • To assist people in lived experience roles to reflect on how to provide, create and deliver a range of peer support activities and care planning to their clients in the most effective way.
  • To assist VCSE organisations in planning and delivering actions that might improve referral rates when needed.
  • To assist VCSE organisations in recruiting to their peer support and lived experience roles, and ensuring actions are taken to maintain optimum levels of retention.
  • To provide direct support to people in lived experience roles by attending joint visits for those service users with more complex issues.
  • To ensure that policies and procedures reflect lived experience roles and practice and are relevant and understood by people in lived experience roles
  • To work directly with teams, services and other organisations in order to help them integrate peer support into their service where needed, and ensure and optimal representation of lived experience roles in daily allocation meetings.
  • To work alongside and support those in peer support roles to help them achieve the competencies identified within the national Peer Support Competency framework


Person Specification

TRAINING & QUALIFICATIONS

Essential

  • Good standard of education with a relevant qualification (equivalent to A level standard) / appropriate portfolio of training in community & /or health, social care or a related field


Desirable

  • Relevant professional qualification registered nurse / AHP/ Social Worker and/or Mental health related qualification e.g. Mental health first aid coaching.
  • Completion of accredited LXP/PSW training
  • Customer Service/ Business Admin /ITQ or equivalent professional experience


EXPERIENCE

Essential

  • Lived experience of mental health challenges or caring for a family member or friend who has experienced mental health challenges
  • Experience of day to day operational team systems - working to a budget/ordering equipment /roster
  • Experience of using Microsoft packages including Microsoft teams
  • Prioritising, planning and organising own tasks
  • Experience of dealing with difficult situations and confrontations
  • Data entry and record keeping experience
  • Recent experience of working in the mental health sector at band 4 or equivalent
  • Experience of working with people and their families who may have complex physical & /or emotional wellbeing needs and require a diverse range of services or support
  • Experience of working in collaboration with others to get a project completed
  • Experience of designing and delivering training and facilitating groups


Desirable

  • Lived experience of mental health challenges or caring for someone who has accessed secondary mental health services
  • Experience of managing and developing a project or service
  • Recruitment and selection of staff/volunteers
  • Performance management of staff
  • Experience of QII approaches


KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS

Essential

  • Understanding about the concepts of recovery and how these might be applied in practice
  • Understanding of the principles and practice of peer support.
  • Good working knowledge of office procedures and all Microsoft office packages
  • Awareness of anti-discriminatory issues
  • An understanding and current knowledge of Policy


Desirable

  • Knowledge of the Trust including awareness of values & priorities
  • Knowledge and Understanding of Voluntary Services supporting carers and/or people with mental health challenges
  • Knowledge of the 4Pi national involvement standards
  • Ability to participate in routine departmental tasks / procedures.
  • Evidence of mental health related training / qualification
