Derriford is a Cancer Care Centre and the largest teaching hospital within the southwest peninsula and offers excellent onsite facilities including a modern library, teaching, meeting and video-conferencing facilities. It has strong links with Plymouth University and the Peninsula school of Medicine and Dentistry.
Scientists or a suitably qualified trainee working towards HCPC registration, to join our busy team within the Department of Histology based at Derriford Hospital Plymouth.The laboratory is well equipped and handles over 40,000 requests per annum.

Biomedical Scientist band 6 must be registered with the HCPC and have demonstrable experience in a Histology laboratory with proven knowledge and skills of a Specialist BMS.
Biomedical Scientist without the specialist portfolio will be considered, but will not be employed at band 6, they will initially be employed at band 5 until they have achieved the Specialist Portfolio, This will be on annex 21 pay.
Main duties of the job
The Department of Cellular and Anatomical Pathology is at provider of Histological and cytological services in the Southwest, serving a population of approximately 450,000.
The post holder will work together with the staff in all sections of the Cellular Pathology Department to produce a timely, high quality, accurate and cost effective service.
The post holder will be based in the Main Lab section of the Histology Department but will be required to work in other sections of the laboratory. During this time they will be accountable to the Section Lead within the area worked for the performance and quality of the work undertaken. The post holder will ensure the timely processing of 40,000 biological specimens submitted for histological and non-gynaecological cytology examination, serving all those patients attending PHNT and the CCGs

1 Participate in routine and specialised techniques in Histology and any other areas as required. This will require the unsupervised preparation of high risk and specialist material eg renal biopsies, to the necessary quality standards.
1.2 Participate in all internal and external quality control/quality assurance systems and schemes, appropriate to the area of work and, using advanced knowledge of staining techniques and pathology, have the necessary competence to send out work to the medical staff.
1.5 Monitor information to assist with audit. This relates to the collation, review and correlation of data for clinical audit, reporting or research purposes.
1.6 To write any procedures relevant to your area of work. To implement procedural change as required by the Section Lead and disseminate information relating to them. In conjunction with other BMS staff, ensure that all operational procedures, protocols and policies within the area of work are maintained, reviewed, updated and audited when necessary.
1.7 Keep up to date with health and safety requirements and take an active part in the Health and Safety of the sections worked. Comply with, and ensure compliance of, other grades of staff with local and national regulations.
1.8 Participate in and conduct staff annual appraisals and set/achieve relevant objectives.
1.9 Assist in the process of continuous quality improvement. This will include audit, corrective action, preventative action and improvement processes.
1.10 Ensure that the necessary communication and relationship skills are maintained to facilitate the smooth running of the section.
1.11 Support income generation initiatives within the section and the Department and undertake work from any source
1.12 Answer telephone enquiries regarding laboratory issues eg giving advice on the correct specimen treatment and storage.
1.13 Ensure that all paper held records, slides and diagnostic specimens are safely filed in the correct location for future use and reference by authorised personnel. Maintain satisfactory records of reports to ensure swift retrieval of information on both hard copy and computer held records.
1.14 Ensure the accurate maintenance of all records that might be required of the post.
1.15 To carry out all work to specified standards laid down by the professional bodies including the Institute of Biomedical Scientists (IBMS), Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) and United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS).
1.16 To rotate through sections of the Department as required.
1.17 Communicate any difficulties, problems, accidents or incidents affecting the delivery of the service or the Department to a line manager promptly.
1.18 To carry out any other duties commensurate with the post.
2.2 Supervise trainee BMSs, Senior ATO and ATO staff in the absence of a senior member of staff.
2.3 Report untoward incidents such as complaints, clinical emergencies, injuries and deficiencies in equipment detailed in Trust-wide and local protocols and procedures
3.1 To possess specialist histological skills and knowledge of the pathology of histological conditions.
3.2 Achieve, demonstrate and maintain technical excellence.
3.3 To meet the necessary competencies of speed, quality and accuracy, appropriate to the level of experience and training in all areas of the Department.
4.1Participate in the clinical trials undertaken by the Department and in any research & development required. This will include sample preparation, analysis and collation of data.
5.1 To attend any training courses, as required by the service or as directed. These may be either Trust led or external to the Trust.
5.2 Supervise trainees in conjunction with the Training Officer and actively participate in the training programme of the Department.
5.3 Encourage and support staff development and training. Ensure timely completion of all induction and training records.
5.4 To participate in continuous professional development (CPD) in accordance with professional regulation and Departmental need and to maintain competence and continuously update your Personal Development Plan
6.1 Provide advice on the collection of specimens for Histological and Non-Gynaecological Cytology examination.
6.2 Determine the suitability of specimen and method of processing.
6.3 Participate in the Cut-up of Histology specimens and provide macroscopic description of specimens during this process, when required, in accordance with the current procedures. The post holder may be required to co-ordinate the activity in this area in the absence of a senior member of staff.
6.4 Participate in the photography of specimens and ensure that this is undertaken in accordance with Departmental protocols and procedures.
6.5 Co-ordinate and participate in the preparation of all types of histological and non-gynaecological cytology preparations for microscopical examination. This will include slides, fresh or fixed tissue, body fluids, smears and stained sections.
6.6 Co-ordinate and participate in verification of quality of preparation with visual and microscopic checking to ensure they meet the required standards.
6.7 To participate in the frozen section service.
6.8 Undertake specialist procedures necessary to provide the Electron Microscopy and Immunohistochemistry services and have the knowledge, skills and competency to complete the work unsupervised.
7 Communication and Working Relationships
7.1 Accountable to the Services Lead through the Section Lead for the performance and the quality of the work undertaken.
7.2 The post holder will work closely with the Departmental Training Officers and Training Co-ordinator to ensure that targets are set and achieved.

- BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Sciences or a degree acceptable to the IBMS and Health Professions Council (HBC).
