NHS England is supporting regional Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) units and affiliated Major Trauma Centres to improve pathways of care as part of the National SCI transformation programme. Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham is recruiting a team of experienced Nursing Staff / Therapists to develop a regional SCI Network model of care (NMC) in conjunction with NHS-E and the Midlands Centre for Spinal Injuries, Oswestry (MCSI).

This is a rare and exciting opportunity for applicants from either a Nursing or Therapy background to move into a specialist acute SCI Practitioner role as a key part of the team delivering the proposed model of care. The successful applicant will work with the recently appointed Clinical Leads for Acute SCI to implement and develop this innovative new model designed to support patients from the point of admission at QEHB and to provide outreach support for SCI patients transferred to other hospitals or rehabilitation settings within the region until they are transferred for SCI rehabilitation at MCSI (Oswestry). The successful applicant will be required to provide clinical leadership, expert practice, advanced knowledge and an understanding of holistic, multidisciplinary teamworking in the field of SCI management. Regular supervision, mentorship and support for training and development will be provided.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidates will be expected to be able to work autonomously and collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, working across professional boundaries to optimise clearly defined patient care plans, outcomes and a stratified follow up programme, to achieve a holistic approach through patient centred care. The post holders will provide leadership, guidance and exercise judgment in making patient centred decisions within current best practice guidance, relevant legal frameworks and with clear understanding of the relevant professional and applied ethical frameworks. The post holder will assist in monitoring and improving standards of care and play an active role in the reporting and evaluation of care related to regionally agreed key performance indicators. The post holders will also play an active role in teaching and supporting professional colleagues and the provision of professional leadership, contributing to clinical effectiveness across the Trust by participating in audit/research as part of the MDT in the field of SCI care and treatment.

The successful candidates will have a proven track record in the delivering the best care for SCI patients and will be a part of a networked model of SCI care with the post holder expected to travel across the region including MSIC.

Qualifications

Essential

  • * Degree qualification e.g. MCSP/ BSc.
  • * To have a MSc/ Masters qualification and/or equivalent experience.
  • * Registration with Health Care Professions Council or Registered Adult Nurse on the NMC Register Evidence of commitment to advanced clinical and non-clinical continued professional development within own speciality, e.g. post registration training, management / Leadership competencies and evidence of a detailed personal development portfolio.
  • * CSP or equivalent professional registration.
  • * Relevant, accredited, postgraduate education/courses in relevant areas of speciality


Experience

Essential

  • * Evidence and ability to revalidate / re-register as required by the NMC / HCPC.
  • * Significant post registration experience of which considerable experience has been in Inpatient SCI in an acute NHS organisation.
  • * Some experience of clinical/service evaluation.
  • * Awareness of current evidence in acute SCI and application to clinical practice, using advanced clinical reasoning skills.
  • * Good understanding of IT systems and its application to clinical practice.
  • * Evidence of achievements and career development in current post and of ongoing professional development/ competence.
  • * Demonstrate expert knowledge underpinned by theory and CPD relevant to speciality.
  • * Significant experience in education and clinical training of others.
  • * Enthusiasm for developing educational programmes and teaching / assessing and supervising others in a clinical setting. Working in a multi-disciplinary and cross agency work environment.
  • * Experience of patient service user advocacy role.
  • * Can demonstrate expert knowledge with an ability to assess, plan , implement and evaluate specialist care delivered to patients and give advice and information to patients / relatives/ care staff.
  • * Awareness of current relevant NHS policy context relating to the speciality
  • * Has understanding / experience of the principles of Safeguarding.
  • * Knowledge of corporate and clinical governance.
