St Bartholomew's Hospital (the Hospital) celebrates its 900th birthday this year and is the oldest working hospital in the country. The hospital is part of Barts Health NHS Trust (the Trust) group model and is proud of its history but more importantly of its reputation for excellence and care, particularly in Cancer, Cardiology and Endocrinology where the hospital ranks among the best in the world.

As a highly specialised and world-renowned Centre of Excellence, St Bartholomew's has exceptionally high standards and ambitions. The Head of Finance for St Bartholomew's will be the most senior finance professional in the Hospital, taking responsibility for the Hospital's operational finance and playing a key role on the Hospital Executive Board. As part of a dedicated and driven team, this role is critical to the delivery of the ambitions and financial health of the Hospital as well as supporting the Trust to maintain its high standards and strong reputation for being at the forefront of innovation and continuous clinical improvement.

Main duties of the job

As Head of Finance for St Bartholomew's, you will report to the Hospital's Deputy Chief Executive with professional accountability to the Trust Deputy Chief Financial Officer - Operational Finance. Leading a high profile, professional team, your key responsibilities will include delivering of all aspects of financial management, and leadership of a team of accountants to provide day to day support in all aspects of the Hospital's financial performance whilst maintaining a positive team culture within the finance function.

Operating effectively as the Finance Director of the Hospital Site, you will be working closely with the Executive team and with clinical, academic and operational colleagues to provide advice, implementing and adhering to financial controls, ensuring operational teams are making informed financial decisions and that the hospital strategy is aligned with the overall group financial and operational strategy and plan.

This will include responsibility for delivery of financial plans and accurate and timely monthly performance reports to the Trust Board, ensuring that procedures and controls are up to date and implemented. You will also provide support to the Deputy CFO with strategic direction and business planning for the Hospital.

The role of the Hospital within the region/system is becoming ever more important particularly with devolution of NHS England Specialised Commissioning.

Person Specification

Qualifications and Knowledge


  • CCAB Fully qualified
  • Education to degree level
  • Masters level or equivalent experience and training
  • IT literate - Spreadsheets, databases, pivot tables ECDL or equivalent
  • Knowledge of NHS Finance and policies, specifically related to financial planning
  • Specialist knowledge of the management accounting function
  • Awareness of current issues and developments in the NHS and the impact on individual organisations
  • Working knowledge of SLAs



  • Experience Two years financial management experience in a senior
  • Experience of working to tight deadlines
  • Extensive management accounting experience including in complex organisations
  • Managing staff and effective team working
  • Experience of leading a finance service in a period of change
