We are looking to recruit a Permanent Band 6 Sister/Charge Nurse to join our friendly team on Ward D8 at Cambridge University Hospitals.

We are looking for someone who is motivated and experienced. Previous orthopaedic experience is ideal together with sound and proven leadership skills.

Main duties of the job

To deputise for the Ward Manager in her absence across the full range of management responsibilities, including bed management and staff management.

To assist the Senior Ward Manager with the recruitment, selection and interviewing of staff.

To be responsible for the assessment of care needs, the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care without supervision.

To assist in the setting and implementation of objectives and appraisal of trained staff, learners and professional care workers and to provide a caring working environment in which staff can maximise their potential and develop skills in clinical practice, teaching and ward management.

To act as a role model and promote effective teamwork across the service to meet the needs of the patients.

To co-ordinate the delivery of safe and effective nursing care within the unit at night, on an internal rotation system. Carrying out the responsibilities and duties of the unit bleep and 794 (fire bleep).

To facilitate training and professional development for all grades of nursing staff.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Current registration with NMC on part one of the register
  • Evidence of continuing professional development and its application


Desirable

  • Teaching and assessing qualification
  • Other post-basic, health related courses


Experience

Essential

  • Proven clinical practice
  • Experience of utilising reflective practice
  • Current/recent experience in the field of Adult trauma


Desirable

  • Experience of mentoring junior staff
  • Experience of teaching junior staff
  • Experience of Ward management in absence of senior colleagues


Knowledge

Essential

  • NMC Code of Conduct and guidelines of professional practice
  • Good theoretical and practical knowledge of nursing within the Clinical areas
  • Health & Safety awareness
  • Quality issues and Clinical Governance
  • Awareness of Trust and Ward/Department policies
  • Awareness of need to demonstrate a professional appearance and behaviour


Desirable

  • Awareness of risk management procedure
  • An understanding of the professional nursing agenda

Skills

  • Proven verbal and written communication skills with all members of the healthcare team, colleagues, patients and relatives
