We are looking to recruit a Clinical or Counselling Psychologist with a passion for working with older people to join our West Essex team. This role will suit someone with a desire for variety and autonomy in their professional role, and will provide significant opportunities for growth. The post is based in the integrated multi-disciplinary team in Stansted, with opportunities to lead on projects and new initiatives across the West Essex three localities. A central part of the role will be the provision of assessments, formulations and interventions for older adults and people living with dementia who have complex mental healthcare needs. The post holder will also be responsible for the development and promotion of psychologically informed ways of working in the multi-disciplinary team and wider partner services. There will be opportunities for multi-disciplinary staff training, consultancy and supervision, and significant scope for the successful candidate to develop the role in response to local need and service development initiatives. Supervision and line management will be provided by the Principal Psychologists and the Head of Older People's Psychology.

Main duties of the job

You would join our cohesive, supportive and well regarded team of 4 qualified psychologists, 2 CAP apprentices and 5 assistant psychologists, providing services in inpatient, community mental health and dementia care settings in West Essex for Older People and people living with mild cognitive impairment and dementia. Our team has strong links with the University of Hertfordshire and University of Essex Doctorate in Clinical Psychology training courses and you will be encouraged to contribute to teaching and placement provision.

You would also join the Essex Partnership University Foundation Trust Directorate of Psychological Services. Your professional development is important to us and we have varied CPD opportunities within the Directorate, supported by a robust supervision and appraisal structure. Our team's therapy interests are diverse, and team members have undertaken post qualification training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, including for PD/CEN, Mentalisation Based Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Diplomas in Neuropsychology. The wider Psychologies Directorate interests include: compassion-focussed therapy, dialectical behaviour therapy, psychotherapy and EMDR.

We will also support you to work flexibly where necessary around caring roles and other commitments.

Job responsibilities

If you are newly qualified and appointed at band 7, the post will be considered developmental. The successful candidate will be expected to consolidate skills and work towards increased confidence and autonomy during a transitional period. Experience of working with older adults and neuropsychological assessment will be an advantage, but we will support you to develop the skills needed. On demonstrating knowledge, training and experience consistent with band 8a, the successful candidate can expect their transition to band 8a to be supported.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Post graduate doctoral level training in clinical or counselling psychology (or its' equivalent for those trained prior to 1996) including specific models of psycho-pathology, clinical psychometrics and/or neuropsychology, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology, as accredited by the BPS
  • HCPC registration


Desirable

  • Evidence of regular continuing professional development through further professional training and experience as required by the Health and Care Professions Council and the British Psychological Society


Skills & Experience

Essential

  • Skills in psychometric assessment and neuropsychological assessment
  • Experience of presenting problems that reflect the full range of clinical severity, including maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems, verbal abuse and the threat of physical abuse
  • Well-developed skills in the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, complex, highly technical and/or clinically sensitive information to clients, their families, carers and other professional colleagues both within and outside the NHS, in highly emotional situations


Desirable

  • Skills in neuropsychological assessment with older people
  • Experience of assessment and intervention with older people with complex mental healthcare needs. Experience of assessment and intervention with people living with dementia and their carers and families
