The Pre Assessment Clinic reviews all adult patients having elective surgery under a General, Regional or Spinal anaesthetic.
The aim is to prepare patients for what to expect before, during and after their operation and to prepare them not only physically but emotionally and socially as well. It is an opportunity to identify any risk factors which may be an issue in the peri-operative period and to minimise those risks through good communication, careful planning and shared decision making between the multidisciplinary team and the patient.
Our nursing staff are highly knowledgeable and skilled in risk identification, problem solving, critical thinking, communication and they work autonomously to manage their own clinics each day whilst also being a friendly, supportive team.
Pre Assessment Clinic receives lots of very positive feedback from patients who are pleased that they have been made to feel welcomed, informed, put at ease, listened to and treated with respect and kindness. A large part of what we do is to reassure patients who may feel anxious about their planned surgery to let them know what to expect from their hospital admission, surgery and recovery and to help patients optimise their health before their surgery so that are at less risk of complications and they recover more quickly.
Main duties of the job
Reviewing patient's health information when they are first listed for surgery to identify risk factors for the peri-operative period.
Making referrals to optimise long term health conditions as necessary.
Reviewing patients face to face in clinic to ascertain health information, medical and surgical history, previous anaesthetic history, airway assessment, social circumstances, exercise tolerance, medication and allergy status.
To provide information regarding surgery and pre and post operative instructions, starvation advice and to advise on post operative care needs.
To provide instructions on medication adjustments such as diabetes management, anticoagulation / antiplatelet therapy including bridging therapy, pre operative bowel preparations or diuretic / antihypertensive medication adjustments.
Clinical assessment of patients including review of existing co-morbidities / long term health conditions and the impact these may have on the patient in the peri-operative period and during their recovery.
Excellent communication, problem solving, critical thinking and documentation skills are essential for this role.
Ordering of appropriate blood tests, Xrays, MRSA screening and urine testing.
Performing MRSA screening, urinalysis, vital signs, height / weight and calculation of BMI, ECGs, peak flow and blood sampling.
About us
We want to attract the best and brightest people to work with us and that means we will look after you from the moment you apply for a role at the Trust and throughout your career with us.
Our staff are central to everything we do, and we believe that investing in you is crucial if we want to enable you to reach your full potential.
