  • The post-holder will act as a Keyworker for patients, via telephone triage, emergency department, SDEC or admitted to the Trust with an oncological emergency, a suspected cancer diagnosis, and complications of Systemic Anti-Cancer Treatment (SACT) or with a cancer of unknown primary.
  • The post-holder will continually evaluate the Acute Oncology/Cancer of Unknown Primary service to improve and maintain standards of patient care and promote a seamless service within a multi-professional framework
  • Be a clinical expert in Acute Oncology and Cancer of Unknown primary with excellent communication skills. The role requires the ability to work autonomously and independently but within an integrated collaborative team

  • Fixed term position for 6 months. We are looking for an individual to be proactive, dynamic & motivated to work with the established AOS CNS team.


Main duties of the job

  • Ensure their role reflects the core components of the clinical nurse specialist which includes: clinical practice, management / organisation, education, research and audit, taking into account the national cancer agenda and its impact on service delivery
  • Delivers quality care by delivering evidence based individualised and personalised care
  • To be a point of contact for patients with a suspected cancer diagnosis, a cancer diagnosis & /or a cancer of unknown primary and patients admitted with complications of Systemic Anti-Cancer Treatment or an oncological emergency
  • Act as a role model demonstrating high standards of care and providing clinical leadership to others
  • Use of advanced communications skills when discussing diagnosis, treatment options, prognosis with patients with a new cancer diagnosis / suspected cancer diagnosis
  • Implementation and evaluation of person-centred care for all patients
  • Support nurses & medical teams in the review & management of inpatients admitted with a suspected cancer diagnosis / a cancer of unknown primary and patients admitted with complications of Systemic Anti-Cancer Treatment or an oncological emergency

Person Specification

Qualification & Training

Essential

  • Active 1st level registration with NMC
  • Relevant accredited post registration qualification at level 3
  • Qualification in Teaching, assessing and Mentoring


Desirable

  • Willingness to work towards Masters level academic study


Knowledge & Skills

Essential

  • Appropriate post registration experience in nursing and speciality
  • Proven commitment and experience, evidence in teaching
  • Understanding of acute oncological emergencies and their treatment management
  • Ability to work effectively in an emotionally demanding environment


Desirable

  • Experience of undertaking research or audit projects
  • Experience as preceptor / mentor
  • Understand the role of the MDTs
  • Relevant post registration experience, at Band 5 or above in Cancer Services including Acute Oncology and Emergency care
  • Understanding of Macmillan Cancer Support and its role across the UK
  • Appropriate proven leadership and management experience
